A neutral shell with an elaborate combination of stunning colours

The client’s request for the walls and fittings of this fantastic high-level Brisbane apartment to be completely neutral set the challenge for John Croft, of John Croft Design, to maximise the use of colour within the furnishings.

Contrasting skirtings or fittings were definitely out, challenging John to come up with a design to stun and amaze both the clients and future visitors to this home.

“All the walls and cabinetry had to be the one colour, completely neutral, with the colour to be added from furnishings,” says John. “The clients were very definite about this — it had to be just neutral. We could get in there and do whatever we wanted as long as we followed that guideline.”

With some stunning glass designs adding to the brilliance of the home, the project began to form. “The clients were heading to Europe and really wanted to bring back glass from Venice to be used. I told them they had to be big pieces and gave them the measurements of the shelving. The pieces had to be big — big and bold.”

One spectacular piece was an Austrian light fitting, designed and commissioned by John, and used to brighten the formal dining area. The intricate crystal-beaded light fixture creates a detailed and unique centrepiece for the room.

The stunning collection of colour continues with another gorgeous light fitting — this time above the breakfast table — imported from Italy and made from vibrant coloured glass.

Two original sculptures by local artist Elf Houwen add to the fun, multi-coloured theme of the home.

A standout room from the others, the main bedroom breaks with the pattern of bright vibrancy to become a cove of relaxation and peace for the owners. Strong, stylish furniture commands the room with rich reds and antique gold, creating a sanctuary for the couple. The elegant, hand-carved floral glass wall to the side of the room completes the look. Assisted by senior interior designer Kylie Mann, John, whose business is celebrating 30 years, says the entire project was a pleasure to complete.

“It was a fantastic challenge to do a project of this magnitude, where everything is being done, including almost the entire rebuilding of the inside of the apartment. It is just magnificent.”

The clients were thrilled with the result, and have since commissioned John to do further projects for their other properties.
