A lavish outdoor room and a spacious family pool … what more could you ask for?
Enjoying a resort experience at home is something we all dream of. Thanks to some design ingenuity and the use of Stone Hub’s products, this family in Yarra Glen, a suburb nestled in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, doesn’t have to dream any longer.
The brief from the owners was to create the ultimate outdoor resort-style space; they wanted it to be an entertainer’s delight on every level and a space that adults and children could enjoy all year round.
The owners had a strong idea of what they wanted included. On their must-have list was an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven, a family-sized swimming pool and spa, a hard court, an outdoor fire pit and a large, level lawn. They also wanted to experience all the luxuries you would expect inside a home, so a home theatre, surround sound and heating to the outdoor room were essential.
The design can be described as Australian resort-style with strong, clean geometric lines; the large pool and spa function as the spine of the property. But while the pool, with its frameless glass fencing acts as a magnet in the summer months, it is the outdoor room that flows from the rear of the home that is the year-round social hub.
The swimming pool surrounds were paved with an integrated combination of Stone Hub’s standard finish Bluestone in both their crazy paving and more geometric rectangular pavers. The actual pool coping was also Stone Hub’s Bluestone, but customised by Stone Hub to deliver 100mm rebated square edge pool copers in custom lengths. This gave the coping a solid look without any visible mortar line underneath the coping and the custom lengths helped avoid any unnecessary cutting on site.
All wall cladding, including retaining walls and fire pit seating, utilised Stone Hub’s Otway Dry Stone cladding, complementing the Bluestone and reflecting the surrounding area. Large steppers next to the fire pit were made from Stone Hub’s Bluestone Rounds, interspersed with ground cover planting.
Stone Hub’s Bluestone in various forms and Otway Dry Stone cladding was utilised for this project for its versatility and ability to complement the overall finished result, blending nicely and balancing well with the soft landscaping rather than standing out as a feature.
