The world of design and production is quickly changing, challenging the existing means in which we consume the objects we have come to depend upon. As techniques and technologies continue to develop the boundaries between the design, manufacturer and user become increasingly blurred as technologies such as the 3D printer revolutionise the role of the consumer.
The Future is Here, is a touring exhibition created by the London Design Museum, which will be on display at the RMIT Design Hub from August 28- October 11. The show will include not only internationally sourced works from the London Design Museum but also a series of local innovative design research projects. The featured works sample the work of crafts people, artists, architects and designers engaging with advanced digital processes.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full program of associated lectures, talks and workshops. Special guest, Alisa Andrasek, in partnership with RMIT School of Architecture and Design will present her project, Bloom. The urban toy, distributed social game and collective ‘gardening’ experience was first installed in London, as part of the capital’s city-wide celebration during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Bloom is designed and developed by Alisa Andrasek and Jose Sanchez from The Barlett School of Architecture at UCL.
Further on display will be a factory equipped with a range of working machines including 3D printers, robots and a CNC milling machine, staffed by RMIT technicians and Industrial Design students. Visitors are welcome to explore, discuss and participate in one of the many programs offered throughout the exhibition.
