Gary Slade is awarded for excellence in design.
Staron® Solid Surfaces, in conjunction with KBDi, congratulates Gary Slade of MadeCo Australia for winning the second quarter of the Staron® Design Awards 2010. KBDi selected Gary’s entry as the winning design because of the creative use of Staron® with a mix of other materials to create a kitchen with classic beauty. In Gary’s first approach to this project, his design objective was to create a large Federation-style kitchen that was inviting and unique. He also wanted to create a sense of warmth within the large space that he had to work with.
When Gary searched for a benchtop surface solution, he chose Staron® Solid Surfaces due to the large colour range and the fact that it is an environmentally sustainable product. He selected Whippoorwill from the Staron® Tempest palette, which features a unique clear chip with a hint of silver, gold and copper. This complemented the Federation style that Gary was creating. The seamless nature of Staron® also allowed for a very wide benchtop on the kitchen island with no open joins — just one continuous surface. The non-porous nature of Staron® also means that no stain is permanent, offering easy maintenance.
Gary also created an interesting ogee-edge profile to the benchtop for added character. “It seemed that a lot of people used Staron® with modern-edge benchtops,” says Gary. “I wanted to showcase Staron® in another way that not only complemented the kitchen style, but also showed clients how else it could be used,” he adds. Using Fennel- and Alabaster-coloured cabinets and classic black handles, Gary created a kitchen space with timeless elegance, which is inviting and oozes warmth. Congratulations to Gary Slade and MadeCo Australia for being recognised for this prestigious award. Staron® Design Awards are open to all KBDi members designing with Staron®.
