At 16 years of age, a young David Denton began his building career as a carpenter’s apprentice for what was one of the leading luxury home builders at the time. It was then that the fire of inspiration was lit and David’s aim from then on was to always build luxury and create some of the best houses around.
Today David does just that, building homes for many high-profile clients. However, when he established his own business, Denton Homes, around 17 years ago, things weren’t always that simple. “It was pretty difficult, like beginning any business, and I didn’t start out building luxury,” says David. “I built up a reputation for great service and went from there.” David is humble when talking about his success as a builder and extremely passionate about his work, but more importantly, he is passionate about the people whose homes he builds. “It’s not about building a house, it is about creating a lifestyle and giving clients their dream home,” says David. “People are important because without the people you don’t have anything. We build long-term relationships with nine out of 10 clients because we take a very personal approach at this level of home design.”
One of the major changes that David has seen over the years is the increasing emphasis on lifestyle. “Aussies love to entertain, have barbecues, swim in the pool, we just love to get outside,” says David. “One of the first things clients ask for today is the seamless integration of indoors and out.” He emphasises the importance of clients communicating with their builder. “I always tell clients that if they feel iffy, then they shouldn’t be working with us. They need to feel comfortable as we are building their dream home, so it is key to have a positive relationship and good communication.” David’s philosophy on design is a clear reflection of this advice. “I believe the design of a luxury home is an expansion of an individual and their personal wants and needs. I make it clear to the clients that it is about them and what they want and that we are there to guide and advise them.” Of course, with David’s giving nature, the environment and sustainability are considered when building with Denton Homes. David believes that this all starts with the right piece of land. “We try to ensure that clients buy the right piece of land that will lend itself to a design that is best aligned with the elements. People want to feel alive in the home, not like they are in a dungeon.”
Denton Homes also incorporates environmentally friendly elements in all aspects, including solar panels, materials, glazing, insulation and water tanks. Specialising in large upscale projects, David has always aimed high, desiring to be recognised as one of the leading builders in the country. While he has worked extensively with charities in Vanuatu to build a school and community buildings, back home in Australia he is always keen to provide personalised service to his clients and continues to set new goals for himself. “My goal is to build just one quality luxury home a year,” says David. “At this level of design I strive to build exclusively to give each client an even greater amount of focus.”
