A kitchen isn’t always just a kitchen. When you have a family, this room becomes more — a place to prepare meals, but also a meeting space. A desk. A place where you eat, snack, laugh and congregate, because all of these things are better when shared.

The team from Ultimate Kitchens & Bathrooms kept this in mind when renovating this room. While the original footprint was already nice and simple, visually and functionally it needed some alterations to make it practical as well as perfect — which is what has been achieved. The original design placed the hotplate next to the stove in a tight little cooking zone. While this sounded good in theory, practically it made the kitchen feel enclosed and cluttered. By moving the hotplate, the room opened up and felt even larger than it already was. Storage is essential to cater for all the appliances, chinaware and glassware that come with a family.

The Ultimate Kitchens & Bathrooms team took this one step further and replaced some of the old cabinet doors with drawers, ensuring the owner could get the absolute most out of the area. An abundance of bench space is perfect for spreading out homework and prepping multiple snacks, and the mirrored splashback makes the room feel even bigger than it already is.

The built-in bar fridge is accessible from the rear of the bench, making it easy for family and friends to grab drinks without having to dodge the cook in front of the stove.

We love the convenience of that bar fridge accessible from the reverse side of the counter.

The Shaker aesthetic just got shook up inside this Ultimate Kitchens & Bathrooms-designed kitchen, which sports a prosperous pantry and high-performing preparation zones. The triple oven tower is the kitchen’s main attraction. The trio moonlights as a screen outlining the messier section of the kitchen, where the main sinks are arranged in a scullery style.

Kitchens can be busy places and we all know the old adage about too many cooks spoiling a certain broth. Luckily, this kitchen was laid out to guarantee optimal flow and minimise bottlenecks in high-traffic areas. The owners’ teenage children can eat or do their homework on the spacious island bench, which also serves as a breakfast area for the busy family. Free of bulkheads, the kitchen was treated to shadowline cabinets, adding height to the overhead storage area.

The inky benchtops are rich with subtle veining that complements the dark-colour palette populating the lower half of the island bench. This deep-hued lower cabinetry enhances the sense of space, which was important considering the design’s inclusion of a rear scullery set-up. A black toughened-glass splashback solidifies the robust essence of the kitchen and speaks to the modernity of the restored space.

An element of symmetry was significant in this design, with the drawers matching throughout and the darker tone of the island cabinets again being picked up in the framing of the TV alcove. What was once a dated, angled kitchen is now the star attraction of this beautiful home.

We love
The projection of the island benchtop, which allows
it to serve as a breakfast bar

Black and white is anything but boring in this space. The clever monochromatic colour scheme is warmed via wooden parquetry flooring that results in a space that looks stunning and is truly practical.

The profile cabinets are the main feature of the kitchen, with the marble-look benchtop and glass mirror splashback adding texture. The kicker on the island and the cabinets at either side of the rear of the bench define this area as the hero element.

Storage space is optimised with the use of drawers throughout the main room and interest was maintained thanks to different handle designs. The tall oven tower was specially designed to incorporate the dual steam ovens the owner
had previously purchased, and this section of the cabinetry leads to the entry of the butler’s pantry.

This pantry is key to the kitchen’s success. It replicates the colours and style of the main galley, but on a more economical budget. Open shelving in the pantry makes for easy access and is again a budget-friendly solution to the one thing every kitchen owner wants — more storage space.
