A restored Paddington terrace is given a modern update with a hard-working kitchen that hits all the right style notes

This Paddington kitchen by Minosa Design is the ultimate in entertaining

Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Paddington is no stranger to historic homes. It’s a neighbourhood famed for its colourful Victorian terraces with wrought iron balconies that are carefully restored, looked after and given a new lease of life by modern tenants.

A family of four recently reconstructed one such home. During renovation, it was revealed that the original construction had been a mediocre one, with defects on every level – meaning the entire interior had to be gutted. This was no mean feat and the project ended up being a lot more than the clients had bargained for – but it also presented an opportunity to start afresh, experiment with the floor plan and create something completely new.

This Paddington kitchen by Minosa Design is the ultimate in entertaining

As part of the renovation, the clients enlisted local interior architecture studio Minosa Design to create a statement kitchen. As the clients love to cook and entertain, the kitchen had to be functional and have plenty of storage, have space to entertain and fit in a long dining table, as well as have a connection to the outdoor area.

This Paddington kitchen by Minosa Design is the ultimate in entertaining

Being a long and narrow building, the designers had to work around an odd layout, as well as existing concrete slab. Through clever design details of ample floor-to-ceiling cupboards that line both side walls and a built-in bench in the dining area, the designers were able to fulfil the clients’ requirements without overwhelming the space.

Touches of dusky pink in the seating and rangehood, as well as gold edging on the cupboards, give this kitchen the wow factor the clients desired, offset by classic black and white to prevent this kitchen from dating quickly. This sense of luxury is matched by the appliances specified. Take the stove, for example, which is sleek and minimal, ensuring it doesn’t take up much space on the bench top.

Then there’s the Zip HydroTap Arc in Matte Black, that takes pride of place in the square sink. This particular tap was a request of the client, who wanted the convenience of instant chilled, sparkling and boiling water on tap. Not only did this fit in with her affinity for entertaining and wanting to provide guests with a variety of filtered water options at the touch of a button, it also worked with the limited space, eliminating the need for kettles or bottles of water on the counter tops.

Efficient, stylish and full of personality, this kitchen shows that sometimes the best things really do come in small packages.

Gaggenau: A history of craftsmanship https://www.completehome.com.au/kitchens/kitchens-articles/kitchens-articles-trends/gaggenau-a-history.html Mon, 05 Aug 2019 00:53:21 +0000 https://www.completehome.com.au/?p=51977 It began with a spark 1683: Our story springs to life on the edge of the Black Forest.…

It began with a spark

1683: Our story springs to life on the edge of the Black Forest. This was an area of poor farmers barely scratching out a living, generation after generation. To tackle this, the aristocratic ruler of the region, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden, diversified. He established a smelting plant in Rotenfels and a hammer mill and nail forge in Gaggenau in 1683.

Inspiration and commitment

1873: Gaggenau metalworks had, by this point, progressed to make farm machinery. Decades had passed and the place and its people began to make a name for themselves. Its ironworks grew in number and scale. The days of making nails were over. New products for a new industrial class were being mass-produced and the foundation of the German Engineering legend was being laid.

The cornerstone of our experience

1880: As a specialist in enamel, Gaggenau produced hardwearing advertising signs for brands such as Odal, Mggi and Stollwerck. This informed the recipe for the company’s robust oven enamel, which in turn formed the basis for the success of its coal and gas-fired stoves. That same lineage of enamel can be seen today in the form of our iconic blue oven interiors.

Moving with the times

The product range adapted into the new century. Gaggenau assumed a pioneering role with a range of innovative products, including coal and gas-fired stoves, as well as bicycles. By 1908, Gaggenau had sold a total of 250,000 “Badenia” bicycles. This success taught the collective of workers and manages the importance of ergonomics, build quality and distinctive design.

Dawn of the labour-saving kitchen

1931: When Dr. Otto von Blanquet took over, the company shifted its focus solely towards coal and gas-fired stoves. In the late 1940s Gaggenau began to produce innovative, economical gas and coal fired ovens. Electric ovens were also manufactured for the first time, with 180 employees eventually involved in producing the famous “Favorit” and “Futura” models.

The advent of built-in appliances

1956: When Georg von Blanquet followed in his father’s footsteps, he paved the way for the fitted kitchen revolution. In 1956 the first built-in, eye-level oven, separate cooktop and ventilation appliances were all brought to market, by us.

His appetite for change was matched only by his demand for quality. New functions had to prove useful to chefs, be study enough for the working kitchen and look beautiful.

The Bauhaus influence

1960s: The Gaggenau logo that still lives on today was developed at the end of the 60s. As with our appliances, it is influenced by the style of the Bauhaus art school, a centre of classical modernism. The simple and pure objectivity of Bauhaus were considered a design revolution and ‘Form follows function’ remains a core Gaggenau belief.

The forerunner of the Vario

1970s: Gaggenau presented the first 28cm wide Vario cooktops with top-mounted control knobs – a forerunner of the now classical advanced Vario cooktop series. This series provides a wide variety of specialised appliances that combine to provide a bespoke cooking experience.

The 90cm handcrafted icon is born

1986: The first 90cm wide oven to reach the European market was inevitably going to impress, with a generous net volume of 87 litres and space for up to four roasts at a time. The EB 300 soon achieved cult status.

Inspiration from America

1990: Inspired by generously-dimensioned freestanding American fridge-freezer combinations, the side-by-side IK 300 launched featuring separate access to fridge and freezer compartments. In addition to five climate zones and manual humidity control, the appliance boasted a clear ice dispenser.

Bringing steam into the home

1999: Gaggenau – Pioneer of healthy eating: The ED 220 steam oven was the first of its kind to be commercially produced for the private home. Since then steam ovens have become the standard for the private chef who demands the best.

Launch of the Gaggenau magazine

2007: Our award-winning magazine highlights intriguing artisans and cultures from around the globe. Designed to interest, inspire and enlighten, it has recently been revamped.

A celebration of wine culture

The Gaggenau Sommelier Awards are held every two years and preceded by regional heats. Uncovering the rising stars in the industy, the finals have grown into a grand afair that have so far been held in Alsace and Vienna.

Introducing steam clean

2015: Gaggenau introduced the latest innovation: an automatic cleaning system for the combi-steam oven that can be easily operated at the push of a button.

An icon reborn

2016: An aspiration of the private chef, and the professional chef at home, the EB 300 has been a Gaggenau icon for over 30 years. This oven is a 90cm testament to the Gaggenau difference, its heritage and traditional avantgarde. Wildly individual, distinctive and iconic, it is the heart of the kitchen. This is a predominantly hand built oven, in a world of machine-made appliances.

A moment in N.Y.

2017: we reimagined gastronomic luxury with a unique epicurean sensorial event in New York that evoked our Black Forest beginnings. Over four nights a select few were treated to an inspiring and inventive culinary movement.

Cooking can be taxing, especially after a hard day at work. This kitchen, designed by Interior Designer Cassandra Fehervary from Design Company No 62 was built by Daniel’s Kitchens and features Staron solid surface benchtops, fabricated by Multiform Benchtops. It shows that with a clever layout, beautiful Staron benchtops, some ingenious accessories and state-of-the-art appliances, the edge can be taken off the daily cooking cycle and the kitchen becomes an enjoyable place to be in.

Looking over the outdoor entertainment area and open-plan layout, the kitchen is perfect for large-scale gatherings and for keeping a watchful eye on the activities of children playing outdoors. The seamless flow between indoors and out is aided by bi-fold doors and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The contemporary, minimalist style and stainless-steel appliances give the kitchen a timeless appeal. Meanwhile, the mass of storage means that nothing needs to be left on the countertops, ensuring the room maintains its uncluttered, tidy look.

For ease of use, cabinets have been implemented in the highest areas of the room to store least-used items. As is now popular practice in kitchen design, drawers have been used for storage in the lower areas. This saves the user from aches and pains due to reaching, pulling and lifting heavy, awkward utensils.

Much thought was put into the structure and location of each area of the kitchen. From the preparation areas to the drinks and coffee-making zone to the cooking area, all sections and appliances have been positioned for ease of use.
Durable materials have been used throughout; the most striking being the hard-wearing waterfall island bench made of Staron surfaces by Samsung.

Light, bright and elegant, this kitchen is an inviting place that has exceeded all considerations and brief requirements.

This beautiful kitchen utilises island benches as a functional and stylish storage solution

“When you can’t choose a single direction, why not take them all? This Collaroy Kitchen Centre design does just that, bringing together multiple ideas from different decades to create a seamless space designed to effortlessly move through time.

The benchtop and counters have a distinct French provincial feel while the industrial-style light fitting and brazen black and white colour scheme toughens up an otherwise soft aesthetic.

Originally a small and unexciting room used purely for cooking, this once tired space has been transformed into a contemporary delight by the demolition of multiple walls.

While it may be aesthetically pleasing, the practicality of this kitchen is immense, with extensive storage, hidden compartments and spacious island perfect for those more intricate gastronomic creations. The best of every possible world, really.”

With butcher’s block, deep fryer and chargrill plate, this kitchen is perfect for any chef — professional or otherwise

We love this kitchen from Freedom Kitchens. Not only is it stylishly designed but is a family kitchen with a unique purpose at heart—to create a space with everything a real chef needs to cook up whatever their heart desires.

Installed are a butcher’s block, deep fryer and chargrill plate, as well as two sinks. Appliances featured include industrial strength rangehood and freestanding cooker. Microwave and dishwasher have been strategically placed out of sight.

One of the challenges of this kitchen design was determining where to place all the built-in appliances to allow plenty of room for meal preparation, entertaining space and the right amount of ventilation.

Ambience was created through a moody colour palette and lighting. Other design elements include Alaskan Gloss Black cabinetry with streamlined linear handles for a sleek appearance. The black and blue mirrored splashbacks make for real statement pieces and allow ease of cleaning.

The renovation star and interior designer gives some tips on enhancing your white kitchen design

Cabinetry such as benchtops, splashbacks, lighting and appliances can completely transform your kitchen and are a great way of adding what Darren terms “a little bling”. Even simple furniture like door handles or a kitchen sink can turn a basic kitchen into something more fantastic.

“The kitchen is one of the most expensive investments in your home. A white kitchen gives you a blank canvas to play with, so use accessories to reflect your personal style,” said Darren Palmer.

Door and drawer font profiles

A great way to add edge to a white kitchen is through the use of door and drawer front profiles. Different profiles fit differing styles of homes—for example a super matt finish, like seen in Freedom Kitchen’s Iceland Range, is sleek and modern, while the Shaker style door lays the foundations for a French Provincial or Hamptons setting.

Benchtops

Be it a stunning Caesearstone top or satin smototh Portfiino solid surface top, benchtops are one of the biggest and most beautiful components of the kitchen. Freedom Kitchens’ professional designers can help you choose the right colours and textures, or a combination of dual-tone benchtops, to give your white kitchen a designer finish.

Layered lighting

A great way to bring in colour, as well as creating ambience, is the use of layered lighting. “Balance necessary lighting with undermount or LED strip lighting and choose beautiful hanging pendants as a strong statement against a white backdrop,” said Darren.

Splashbacks

According to Darren, splashbacks are more than just colour-backed glass. “Look to stone, tiles with texture, pattern, colour or even mirror to add a sense of luxury and space,” he said.

Furniture

Last but not least is furniture. “Bench stools add a little designer element, while accessories like a toaster, small appliances, bowls, styling, books and tea towels can all be layered into your beautiful white kitchen for colour and interest,” Darren said.

Simple and gorgeous, this light and bright kitchen design uses its surroundings to its advantage

“A large space that is both light and modern was the brief for this contemporary kitchen. The clients wanted a large kitchen with ample storage, as well as a dining and study area to suit the needs of their family. The modern grey-and-white colour scheme opens the room and is beautifully accented with light timber that adds interest.

The dark grey tile splashback is elegant and complements the space. Extensive windows brighten up the room with natural light, while stylish white pendant lights provide light in the evening. Simple silver-handle wares create a sense of minimalism and uniformity. The long island bench provides extensive space for dining, work and entertaining and has plenty of storage.”

Designer: Barry Balmer for Designline Kitchens & Bathrooms

Expert tip:

Use large windows and lighting to create the illusion of a larger space.

We love:

After a gruelling double elimination last week, the two remaining teams of Reno Rumble – Carly & Leighton and Ayden & Jess – fought it out for the top spot during the Grand Final

Congratulations to Ayden & Jess who were crowned the winners, and scored and impressive 18/20 for their Contemporary Classic kitchen. Let’s take a look at the final two kitchen reveals.

Ayden & Jess took on the challenge of opening up Nicole’s kitchen and turning it into an open plan Contemporary Classic in their final Reno Rumble renovation.

They reconfigured the space, opening up the kitchen and adding a square island bench to house the tap/sink and an abundance of storage. The colour scheme is classic white on white, and the combination of contemporary doors and modern rangehood balance the elegant handles and detailed panelling to create a warm and welcoming space.

The final brief in the series for Carly & Leighton was to transform Lisa’s small orange retro kitchen into a Contemporary Australian kitchen. And they’ve certainly ticked all the boxes – open plan with a free flowing layout, seamless indoor/outdoor connection, casual eat-in dining and a relaxed and natural colour palette.

Every detail from the durable Caesarstone benchtops to the integrated appliances and extensive storage solutions ensures this kitchen is an Aussie dream come true. Deserving of its 19.5/20 score from the Judges!

Homeowner Lisa says she loves spending time in her kitchen, and is particularly thrilled with the versatile dining space. “We can now have a large group over and there is plenty of space for them to sit. I feel that we are using the space more and more with family and friends.”

The renovations will be judged by interior design experts; one team will be crowned winners each week, and the couple receiving the lowest score on the losing team will be eliminated. The couple that wins the entire series will collect $100,000, half going to their chosen charity.

Renowned for bringing cutting-edge contemporary design into Australian homes, Freedom Kitchens will guide competing contestants through the creative design process to deliver kitchens that tick all the boxes on the homeowners brief.
