The kitchen, by Smith & Smith Kitchens, is galley-style, enabling the owner to move about with ease. Clear cooking and preparation zones make dinnertime a breeze, and the under-bench seating gives the room a conversational feel and allows it to double as a casual dining space.

Crisp white cabinetry is the perfect backdrop in the kitchen and living areas. The ultra-pared-back design has little interruption, with handleless J-grip drawers and doors offering easy access — and there are doors and drawers aplenty. Storage is bountiful in this space, ensuring all the chinaware and kitchen appliances are able to be hidden from sight.

This white backdrop enables other materials to shine. A grand marble splashback draws the eye, but it’s the addition of the marble perched precariously atop the stainless-steel benchtop that really lights up the space. This gravity-defying cantilevered feature takes the room from simple to sensational. The marble then continues along the cabinetry, extending into the dining room and once more ensuring a sense of cohesion not only exists, but flourishes in this home.

Whatever the reason, Smith & Smith Kitchens has truly showcased timber in this gorgeous room with impressive results.

Recycled floorboards were used in paneling and hidden doors. A further use of recycled timber is seen in the open shelving located on the back wall of the kitchen. These wooden elements help the room feel connected to the rest of the home thanks to the sloped timber ceiling that stretches overhead.

This recycled style adds warmth to the light industrial design theme present in the space, largely thanks to the Caesarstone concrete benches and the dull black cabinetry. Shaker-style doors are a nod to the home’s countryside setting and add a balanced contrast in the space.

Functionality was front of mind for the Smith & Smith Kitchens team when designing this room. Walls were moved, creating a new doorway for the walk-in pantry area that opened up the kitchen and allowed better access to the fridge. All walkways were widened to ensure unencumbered mobility throughout, and the ovens were raised into a tower for convenient use.

While the homeowners wanted a kitchen with modern functionality, it was important to design the space to complement the home’s heritage. Accordingly, a pared-back Hamptons-style space was designed and materials and fixtures chosen.

Face frame cabinets were integrated for a truly old-school, handcrafted look, and tongue-and-groove lining boards painted in white were integrated to provide the perfect backdrop for a casual country kitchen.

Though island benches are very much in vogue right now, it is wise to know when an island bench is not welcome. This kitchen could have housed an island bench, but it would have meant that the wall of storage would not fit.

The storage wall was more important to the homeowners’ lifestyle as they required space for numerous kitchen items and bulk pantry goods, so it was implemented. A small square display area was built into the space in the form of overhead cabinetry in which cherished items could be displayed.

This new home overlooks a vast, hilly landscape dotted by eucalypts and kangaroos on the fringes of Melbourne. With this in mind, the homeowners requested a natural-look kitchen, a timeless space that wouldn’t date. They wanted a design that was pared-back without any unnecessary detail.

The designers opted for a linear, streamlined architectural layout featuring minimalist shapes, which looks great as you descend into the space from the entry foyer stairs. The homeowners liked the idea of mixing colours and textures, so materials were chosen accordingly.

The benchtop and splashback were chosen for their ability to inject a touch of drama into the space, and the timber elements were worked in to add contrast and warmth. The end result is a kitchen with a moody balance of light and dark, smooth and texture — a beautiful yet functional space that is just what a young, growing family needs.

The cantilevered benchtop allows for family and guests to sit on both sides for casual eating and entertaining. The design at its core is functional, cutting out the typical pantry run by offering easy access to spices and oils within the cooking area. The fully opening doors of the appliance cabinet ensure complete access to its contents while it acts as a display piece with its gorgeous matching black internals. The combination of near black and white is spectacular, generating a calming ‘night sky’ effect of the space that feels simultaneously close and far, and the white provides definition to the area. The soft grey benchtops reflect the light that floods into the kitchen from the cleverly designed skylight and LED strip lighting to provide excellent visibility for food preparation — a feature the cooking-loving homeowner enjoys. From the muted splendour of the carefully chosen colour scheme to the highly functional work spaces, this kitchen is a masterpiece of design.”

The kitchen was designed so the enormous mantle is the feature of the room, with unique and original surroundings. The gothic-styled overhead cabinets, a nod to the doors of the house, connect the spaces. Most of the appliances, bar the beautiful Lacanche stove and butler’s sink, were integrated so overly modern appliances were hidden and more traditional features were highlighted. We incorporated open shelves for plates and crockery, backlit for a lovely display. The gorgeous mirror-backed curved niche open shelf is simply stunning. To avoid impinging on this grand design, the butler’s pantry was designed to further increase storage space and provide access to appliances. The kitchen is a space of grand dimensions, balanced in design and with a restrained elegance.”
