Transformed from outdated to outstanding, a poorly designed and neglected Brighton home receives the Canny treatment.

Having spent more than two decades designing and building homes across Melbourne, Canny knows a thing or two about what’s hot and what’s not in terms of interiors. And this Brighton interior is so steamy we need to take a minute to towel off and cool down.

Home-grown Aussie heroes and the sparkling glitterati are a dime a dozen in the affluent coastal hub of Brighton. The likes of Shane Warne, Chris and Bec Judd and AFL stars aplenty have called this ritzy residential suburb home. More than colourful beach boxes, Brighton boasts stately, sprawling homes and grand residential blocks. And unlike those quintessential colourful beach boxes, we’re more interested in what’s happening inside the homes of Melbourne’s second wealthiest suburb. Average incomes are sky high in these parts, only bested in Toorak, so you can safely assume there are some pretty spectacular interiors dotting the neighbourhood. Thankfully, luxury concept homebuilding firm Canny kindly invited us inside one of the company’s recent projects in Brighton and the results did not disappoint.

With four bedrooms and just as many bathrooms (including two full and two powder rooms), a trio of living spaces and a study, the interior has adopted an open-plan approach to family living while still allowing for zoned spaces and privacy.

In addition to adhering to residential codes specific to the area, the Canny crew carefully customised the block shape and size, taking site orientation into consideration to maximise north light and the aspect of the rear garden.

One of Canny’s concept homes inspired the design but, like any of the firm’s projects, it was individualised to the clients’ accommodation requirements and lifestyle.

The client requested a contemporary and luxurious modern home that wasn’t shy when it came to clean lines and energy efficiency. Touting a six-star energy rating, it certainly ticks all the (fully recyclable) boxes when it comes to sustainability. Double glazing, full insulation, including all wet areas, intuitive ventilation and LED lighting all make themselves known inside this stunning home that is economically run with heating, cooling and hot water zoned to specific areas of the house.

“It’s a million-dollar home but it’s not too precious. It’s a practical home where you can sit back and enjoy each and every space,” says Canny interior designer Janine Carter, adding that Canny’s careful consideration of the architecture and design ensured the project produced an end product consistent with the original plans, materials and finishes. “It was important that this home would stand the test of time and not date or age quickly.” Like any home or human looking to halt premature aging, you can’t go past the classics, which is why Canny introduced subtle colour and material palettes.

The subtle palette is accentuated with punchy, luxurious finishes such as black pivot doors and sleek, seamless joinery, which help create a light, airy, calm atmosphere. “We used lots of whites, light flooring, soft grey Italian porcelain tiles, marble, timber veneers and sleek, considered, black accents,” muses Janine. “Large-format windows and a generous-sized entrance and hallways allowed us to create light, airy, open spaces in the downstairs living areas.”

Over in the powder room, a unique and individualised space welcomes rich materials including marble, brushed rose gold tapware, a feature pendant to create a moody, dramatic space, and a black-framed mirror that gently conceals LED lights. “The master bedroom’s walk-in robe and ensuite were designed to create a luxe, high-end hotel feel,” concludes Janine.
A canny built and designed interior, this Brighton home is giving its fancy neighbours a run for their money
