Flooded with welcoming morning light thanks to a double-storey void in the living area, the kitchen truly takes advantage of the home’s easterly aspect. This beautiful natural light is supplemented by stylish contemporary lighting delivered by Lights Lights Lights. The homeowners have a kitchen that is a chef’s delight, with a functional butler’s pantry for food preparation so the kitchen can be kept tidy. The island is perfect for informal dining; there is room to pull up a chair and chat with family over the day’s events, or to share a casual meal with friends.

The rounded island and fluted marble floor-to-bench tile gives the kitchen sculpted form, softens the space, and adds plenty of designer flair. All of these elements, including the custom-made ceiling panelling, create an instant wow factor in the space, leaving friends in awe every time they visit.

The tricky thing about extensions is that more often than not fabulous new rooms leave the existing home looking particularly outdated. This kitchen is a classic example, as it found itself smack-bang in the middle of a Californian bungalow-style home, still dressed in its dark timber façade.
The owners recruited designer Peter Gill to help transform their kitchen into one that would match the new style and colour scheme, without being too “old-world”. The room had also never been wide enough for an island bench, so that was high on the wish list as were lots of drawers, a large cooker, an integrated fridge and dishwasher and a large single-bowl Versa sink. The Miele dishwasher and Falcon Toledo cooker were a perfect fit and a fully integrated Liebherr refrigerator placed next to the pantry looks as if it’s part of the furniture.
The island bench was a little more difficult to accommodate, however, so Peter had the dining room wall removed and moved the kitchen doorway to a more convenient position. This created enough space for a massive island bench complete with plenty of drawers, cabinets and shelving — much to the owners’ delight.
White Carrara marble benchtops and splashbacks further help make the room appear larger, and small Art Deco-style leadlights towards the top of the cabinets add a special touch. This feature is echoed in the kitchen on the matching drinks cabinet and integrated bar fridge below,
and is carried through the house to the cosy
home office. Now the home’s extensions need not steal the limelight — this stunning kitchen has certainly come into its own.

Instead, we blended the sleek look of built-in appliances and the pure luxury of Calcutta marble with warm, useable accessories to create a truly beautiful modern haven that still feels like it belongs in a home. Inviting blush tiles and the continuation of cosy wooden tones used throughout the rest of the build keep the tone warm rather than sterile, while a neutral colour palette avoids any accusation of kitsch. A U-shaped kitchen bench further welcomes in guests and maximises usable bench space, while the addition of an eating area creates a viable alternative to the more formal dining space. The overall effect is a truly versatile room, ideally suited to vibrant dinner parties and leisurely weekend breakfasts with the paper.”

There is a sense of rumbling as a thunderbolt of New York marble cracks and erupts sporadically across this design. Visually stunning materials complement and contrast each other to create this beautiful, modern kitchen.

Our clients were looking for a minimalist aesthetic with a warm accented touch and no handles. Vertical wall panels emulate dark clouds typical of an overcast day and camouflage the opening into a walk-in pantry.

American oak veneer and beautiful New York marble lift the space and instil a sense of serenity. Island cabinets with a push-to-open function provide added storage and bring simplicity to the island’s design.

We incorporated a concealed appliance area with bifold doors allowing easy access to internal power points and open-shelf storage. Flush-mounted LED strip lights were specifically placed in task zones, adding mood and ambience to the space.”
