When you think of security cameras, you typically think of in-store closed-circuit cameras or wireless webcams to monitor your home.

Perhaps you have a video doorbell to keep an eye on deliveries and watch your front door while you are away. But how do you monitor vacant properties? How do you keep an eye on an empty lot, an empty building, or remote locations?

There are many reasons that you may want to set up security systems for remote locations. For example, contractors will want to keep an eye on construction sites to prevent theft and vandalism after hours. Storage yards that house expensive equipment might need additional security. Farmers may want to set up security cameras for vacant land or to monitor livestock. You may even want to secure a campground or monitor wildlife with a portable trail camera.

You may want indoor security cameras for vacant properties. You can use remote indoor security cameras to monitor vacation homes even when you turn off the power. You can also use remote indoor security cameras to watch barns and outbuildings, or to surveil parking kiosks and ticket booths that may lack power or wiring.

There are several applications for remote video monitoring. The challenge is deciding how to set up security systems for remote locations easily and cost-effectively.

Monitoring Vacant Properties with a Wireless Security Camera

How Do You Monitor Vacant Property?

Security systems for remote locations have unique requirements. There are specific factors that you need to understand in order to choose the right camera system:

Power
Any electronic device needs a power source. With home or business security systems you have power readily available. When you install a remote security camera system in a location like an empty building or a field, you need a reliable, self-contained power source. You have two basic options:

1) You can choose a security system with a long-life battery. You will need a system that can continue to operate between site visits, so the battery may need to last for months.

2) You can use a solar-powered system like the MaxRanger4K™, or you can add a separate solar power system such as the SWIFI-SOLAR2 solar panel with an outdoor stand to a standalone wireless camera, like the Xtreem4K. Solar power is more reliable since the energy is renewable, and most solar systems have sufficient battery storage to run year round, including during overcast and rainy days.

Connectivity
Having a remote security system is only valuable if you can access the camera images. If you plan to use web monitoring, using a Wi-Fi connection is your most cost-effective option. If you can’t place a Wi-Fi router near the security camera, consider other Wi-Fi alternatives. Many municipalities have started offering free Wi-Fi to residents. Some cellular and cable service providers also provide free, regional Wi-Fi coverage for customers. In addition to internet access, you should consider recording security footage. You can set up a DVR or NVR to capture webcam footage from your home or office, or you might consider using cloud data storage.

Lighting and visibility
If you are installing a security system for a remote location then you will want a camera that has lights built-in or that can operate at low light levels. Installing a high-resolution camera with built-in floodlights like the MaxRanger4K™, Xtreem4K or AllSecure 4K deliver a clear image and the motion-activated lights can be a great deterrent to thieves and vandals. You can also install standalone floodlights, like the 4K Floodlight with built-in motion sensor.

Image resolution
Be sure to check the camera specifications to ensure you have sufficient resolution for the size of the area you need to cover. A low-resolution camera may not give you sufficient resolution to cover a field or a storage yard, especially at night. Learn more about what video resolution is right for you.

Alerts and notifications
Since the security system is remote, alerts and notifications are essential. The system should alert you via text message to an intruder or some other emergency. Consider a passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors detector system like Swann’s True Detect™ motion and heat camera. Be sure the system sensitivity is sufficient to spot intruders, but not so sensitive that it sends an alert with every bug or raindrop that passes by. Read our guide on PIR-based security monitoring here.

Vandalism and tampering
Any security camera can be a target for vandalism, especially when it’s installed in a remote area. You have options to prevent vandalism. You can try a tamper-proof, clear enclosure, but a determined vandal could make short work of a plastic case. A better option is to install the camera where it is inaccessible, such as on a high pole or rooftop. It’s important to remember not to mount the security camera(s) too high as then their PIR (approximately 8 metres) and night vision operating range may be exceeded.

Weatherproof
Of course, a remote security camera mounted outdoors needs to be weatherproof. Choose a security system designed to withstand the elements, including high wind, driving rain, and extreme temperatures. A weatherproof system will give you longer, more reliable service.

Despite difficult access, and intricate dampness control measures, ProBuilt Projects and the team at MILEHAM delivered a modern and seamless update of a heritage property.”

Central to the restoration was the seamless integration of a contemporary pavilion, built in 1994, with the original heritage house. This was not merely an architectural challenge but a delicate balancing act of respecting historical design while introducing modern amenities. The result is a cohesive flow between the two buildings, harmonising indoor and outdoor living spaces.

The home, which began to show signs of age and wear, underwent a stunning revival. Stepping through the sturdy blue front door, you will be met by bespoke Flourish Vintage Navy Blue textured floor tiles, providing a sneak peek of what is yet to come around the corner. Strategic placement of new doors and a Velux roof window not only enhanced energy efficiency but also added to the visual appeal of the interior, while letting the morning light in. The core of the home, once draped in outdated features, found new life through an entirely revamped kitchen and living space. Preserving and refinishing the original 1950s hardwood floors paid respect to the home’s history while accommodating modern layout adjustments that enabled a seamless flow throughout. The repositioned kitchen brought in a sense of airiness that refreshed the entire space. Fitted with crisp white cabinetry and complemented by chrome fixtures, the polished concrete countertops and Penny Tile feature splashback created a sweet blend of modern flair.

Respecting this home’s heritage has resulted in design triumph at Riversdale.

Riversdale is the site of a historic home with views encompassing not just the rolling verdant countryside, but the tranquil Malmsbury Reservoir. There’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to vistas — it’s almost no wonder the home is set on the site of a former gold mine.
The original cottage was constructed here in 1881 and is now heritage listed. “The Riversdale property was purchased in 1881 by the clients’ great-great-grandfather, William Young, who immigrated to Australia in 1866 at 19 years of age,” says Cameron Greiner of JOST Architects. “The property included two gold mines but no house, so he had the original brick cottage built that year, which still stands today.”

Cameron Greiner of JOST Architects.

Of course, since that time, the property has enjoyed numerous additions and alterations. Yet previous renovations failed to truly celebrate the original residence or capitalise on the expansive views. Enter Cameron from JOST Architects, a friend of the client who was passionate about bringing this new project to life. “The clients, who are close friends of mine, approached me to take on this project back in 2018, knowing it would be one of my first significant projects to design and deliver as a registered architect,” says Cameron. “Typically, my work to date had been in conjunction with or under supervision of my director, Patrick Jost.”

Cameron’s design vision did not disappoint. The brief was based on retaining the original building and adding a significant addition to suitably house a young growing family (four at the time of the renovation, now five and counting). “The children are the sixth generation of the family to live in the house,” reveals Cameron. “A number of subsequent family members have lived and passed away while living at Riversdale, most recently Andrew’s uncle, who was a skilled botanist and planted many of the exotic tree species still present around the house.”

brief was based on retaining the original building and adding a significant addition

Preserving the historic significance of the cottage was of utmost importance, but it did not come without its challenges and required careful coordination with the council heritage architect to respect and preserve its character. “Additionally, challenging site conditions, such as existing mature trees and retained structures, presented obstacles that needed to be addressed during the design process,” says Cameron. “The decision to retain the red-brick garage and create a specific space between existing structures for the addition required thoughtful planning.”

Yet the result speaks for itself. The cottage now boasts a new ensuite, bathroom and laundry, allowing for greater functionality. An addition was incorporated, allowing for a new rumpus room that connects the old and new buildings, as well as a living room, dining area, kitchen, butler’s pantry and wine store, mudroom with powder room, two new bedrooms and a shared bathroom. “One of these bedrooms can operate like a second master bedroom, with a sliding door from the hallway to enclose the bathroom and bedroom wing,” explains Cameron. This suits the clients’ needs particularly well as they have overseas relatives who need a suitable zone to accommodate their extended stays.

The cottage now boasts a new ensuite

When beginning the design process, Cameron was able to mine the property itself for inspiration. “The inspiration for the design was drawn from a desire to respond directly to the rural landscape and the site’s topography,” he says. “The architecture sought to complement rather than imitate the existing structure, and the choice of materials and colours was carefully considered to harmonise with the overall site. The family’s appreciation for the spatial and material characteristics of the original cottage also played a significant role in inspiring the design approach.”

When beginning the design process

Warmth and authenticity were created via clever material choice. “Galvanised corrugated iron roofing and standard cost-effective bricks were used for the addition, responding to the farming sheds on the property. The darker brick tone for the primary colour and a lighter tone on the corners reproduced the unique quoin detail used on the original cottage,” says Cameron. “These choices were intentionally recessive to the cottage, ensuring the addition harmonised with the existing structure without dominating its character.”

Warmth and authenticity

Sustainability was considered in the design, with passive design principles weaved into the project. A northern orientation for maximum sunlight in the living areas and bedrooms was prioritised, and substantial insulation throughout the house helps retain warmth in the cooler months. The wrap-around verandah and double-skin brick of the cottage effectively keep the house cool in summer without the need for mechanical cooling. “Moreover, the project includes a hydronic heating system powered by heat pumps and is soon to be run off a large solar PV and battery system, further enhancing its environmentally friendly features,” reveals Cameron.

Sustainability was considered in the design

With so many exciting elements as part of the renovation, it could be hard to choose a favourite — but Cameron lists his preference as the rumpus room, which acts as a threshold between the dedicated communal spaces and the sleeping quarters. “It creates a sense of privacy and sanctuary while enhancing cohesion and flow through the home,” he notes. “The glazing on the east and west sides provides beautiful views of the surroundings, connecting occupants with
the natural landscape.”

Natural Landscape

The renovation has not only brought new life to the property, but celebrated the home’s history — as well as revealing more of the family’s past to the present occupants. “One particularly memorable moment was when we discovered old family memorabilia and historical artefacts hidden in the original cottage during the renovation,” says Cameron. “It was a heart-warming experience for both the clients and the design team to uncover these pieces of history, connecting the past with the present and reinforcing the importance of preserving the property for future generations.”

Congratulations to our overall winner!

Aaron and Di completed a full-home reno in 2022 in Burleigh Waters, on the Gold Coast. “The original house was very closed in and did not make full use of the amazing canal views,” says Di.

“It was dated and ugly. We created an open-plan living set-up and added a second-storey parents’ retreat which looks out to the beautiful Gold Coast hinterland. In the original house, there was a sitting room/atrium that never got used, but we still liked the idea.

We used that in our reno and now we have a beautiful garden atrium that brings the outdoors in. Our home now has a timeless coastal feel which very much suits Gold Coast living!”

Sally Badger and Joshua Carolan rented this house for two years before it came on the market to buy. “It is a small, 100-year-old workers cottage which was made smaller by pokey rooms and disjointed indoor/outdoor living spaces,” says Sally. “The whole time we rented, we imagined what we would do if we owned the house, how we’d open it up, make it feel more spacious and liveable while keeping the character of the heritage home. This renovation is two years of imagining, thinking and iterating come to life, and it’s even better than we ever dreamed.”

SHOREWARD HOUSE

“The house is full of life again after 25 years of ‘it will do’ from the previous owners,” says homeowner Kate Hardy. “Very little structural work was done but everything in the house is new … floors, doors, skirts, hardware, etc. Our house is perfect for our active family and I love calling it home.”

FAMPTONS (HAMPTONS IN FLINDERS)

Ashleigh Murray and Ricky Cullen fell in love with the cul-de-sac street and potential of this house. “We knew it would be our home but it was very dated, with pink walls, cream accents and red brick. It was far from the Hamptons-inspired beach homes we loved. So we decided to bring the Hamptons to Flinders, NSW, instead,” says Ashleigh. Inside, the renovation includes detailed Intrim Mouldings wainscoting, high-end bathroom finishes, and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the pool. Outside includes a pool surrounded by limestone, white Polvin fencing, outdoor kitchen with Caesarstone benchtops, a keg, fridge and Hardiedeck. “It’s resort living and the perfect entertaining spaces for our personalities,” adds Ashleigh.

Finalist 6:

GREENACHE RESIDENCE

“As much as the mid-century kitchen still looked its part, it was time for an update,” says homeowner Sarah Nolen. “Our home now reflects our individual lifestyle: family life surrounding the kitchen island and feasting with friends and family. The dark and moody interior isn’t your classic look and that’s why we love it. It reflects our unique personalities and it provides a talking point for everyone who enters our front door. The home is now zoned in a way that provides ample space for multiple gatherings, whether it’s reading our toddler a book on the lounge or a 50-person barbecue on the back deck.”

Finalist 7:

REIMAGINED OVERMAN, PEPPERMINT GROVE

“The original space was 1980s Overman-designed with curved lines, light and flow, but now contemporised architecture brings even more natural light into the home,” say homeowners Joanne and Michael Tait. “Gold accents, ‘braver’ tile choices and interesting design touches create a home. For example, a cellar door — it’s just a steel door with feature glass but bespoke for the room and speaks of quality and high-class finish. Powder and ensuite tiles are bold but in keeping with the overall design elements. The alfresco is now a lovely space, amplified with bifold doors from the kitchen, a good size, bright and private — essential for a Perth home with climate-necessitating functional indoor/outdoor space.”

This heritage-listed building has enjoyed a modern makeover, resulting in a home the owner truly loves.

Some buildings are steeped in history. This home in Victoria’s Ballarat is one such place, with more than 100 years of love, laughter and living experienced within its four walls.

Yet a house doesn’t exist for that long without experiencing signs of ageing. When the new owner purchased this property, the weatherboard dwelling was in desperate need of repair. It also needed to be modernised to suit the owner’s vision as the perfect home for him and his cats.

a much-needed makeover.

Enter Smith & Sons Ballarat, who took this historic house and gave it a much-needed makeover. This was quite extensive and incorporated three bathrooms and two bedrooms, with care taken to respect and preserve the existing features of the heritage home while still meeting the owner’s contemporary expectations.

a much-needed makeover.

“He wanted to feel at one with nature, so lots of natural products were used including timber and stone,” explains Ben Beasley, one of the directors and builders at Smith & Sons Ballarat. “He wanted a builder that understood his vision and would help bring it to life.”

a builder that understood his vision and would help bring it to life

Ben and his co-director and builder Rhys James certainly did just that. This home features many natural materials including a rich timber floor that warms the entrance hall. The use of wood continues in the bathroom with a blackbutt veneer vanity with blackbutt top — the perfect partner for the masculine grey tiles and generous shower space.

The second bathroom in the home is equally striking, with a brick feature wall paired with a black-and-white colour scheme. The freestanding bath emphasises the colour palette, with the matt-black tapware and fixtures acting as punctuation marks against the glossy white wall tiles.
Timber veneer is continued again in the kitchen, where it links the cabinetry with a dining table that extends off the island bench. This is kept feeling modern thanks to the black cabinetry and the polished concrete floor that make this contemporary extension to the house really sing. Glass display cabinets offer the opportunity for a personal touch in the room.

As per the owner’s brief, natural light is welcomed into this abode with windows at every opportunity, including as a splashback over the sink in the kitchen and up high in line with the sloped ceiling in the living area, inviting light to travel down through the space.

Modern Kitchen Design

Consideration was given to the home’s aspect with a covered outdoor entertaining area extending the usable footprint. This provides a great space for the owner to host family and friends. Spotted gum timber battens on the patio were another natural material used in the build.

Some technological considerations were made to ensure the home remains temperate all year round. “The property is in Ballarat, so the underfloor heated slab was definitely a needed and smart feature,” says Ben. “It will make the cold winter days more bearable.” Mounted wall heaters are also present in the bedroom.

Internally, the building’s history was celebrated with ceiling mouldings and wainscotting in the hall. Considered feature lighting both acknowledges the home’s history and modernises it where needed, creating perfect harmony for the owner.

Externally, the history of the home was respected, with the features of the original facade maintained, yet this didn’t come without its challenges. “The location of the existing house, which was heritage listed, was situated far back on the block, so this restricted the design of the house, and we needed to build the extension from boundary to boundary to accommodate the client’s brief,” says Ben.

There were also issues with the garage’s external wall on the boundary, which was lower than ground height. The Smith & Sons Ballarat team incorporated a block retaining wall into the design to resolve this issue.

The finished result is one the owner loves and the builders certainly are proud of. “This project has many amazing features that all cohesively work together to create a beautiful home,” says Ben, “from the polished concrete floor to the beautiful timber and black kitchen, and the two completely different bathrooms that are both equally amazing. All the little details put together make this project so special.”
