When Ecoshelta looked to build three high-end, luxurious beach front eco cabins on King Island in Bass Straight, they needed a roofing and wall cladding solution that was corrosion resistant and durable in the face of often extreme weather conditions
As a luxury boutique retreat, Kittawa Lodge King Island offers one-bedroom, self-contained lodges designed to be completely off-the-grid with the highest quality and sustainable fittings and finishes, within and without.
Ecoshelta’s Sustainability & Development Officer Tim Woods said Bondor / Shademaster’s aluminium insulated roof and wall cladding fit the criteria for several reasons.
“The corrosion resistant aluminium panels were ideal for the harsh coastal environment, with persistent trade winds and weather caking the site in salt daily.
“The flat pan with a standing seam profile provided a seamless and watertight roof-to-wall design – perfect for the high wind and rainfall environment.
“The panels also offered the ultimate in-environmental protection, and superior insulating properties for all-year round comfort.
“The external walls were clad-over-the-top of the Bondor panels, internally as well with plasterboard.
“The Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) were a fantastic structural base and insulation/waterproofing barrier,” he said.
The roof layer consists of 0.9 aluminium with a choice of 13 high gloss colours, delivering a heat reflective and easy to clean finish. The polystyrene insulation layer is bonded under pressure to the roof and ceiling layer, with specially formulated adhesive to give strength and durability.
Internally, the insulated roofing replicated a flat ‘ceiling’ appearance, which creates a light and bright space by allowing light to easily reflect. This was a perfect finish for the cabin design, affording visitors with panoramic views of the coastline and the rolling hills of the island.
The prefabricated panels were easily transportable inside a standard 20’ shipping container, and weredelivered to the site by an ocean-going barge. The lightweight nature of the panels means that no heavy machinery was necessary, and therefore this sensitive beach front location was preserved.
This also allowed Ecoshelta to use a combination of their own site crew and local labour – with manpower alone enough to erect the framing.
