Inspired by a combination of American and Australian lifestyle elements, this generous-sized resort-style entertainers’ pool and spa seamlessly integrate with the home, landscape and rolling hills beyond
Located on a large acreage in beautiful Red Hill, a small rural community on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, this modern resort-style pool and spa truly packs a punch in both form and functionality. The property has been developed primarily for a family to entertain, and the space was designed to connect American and Australian lifestyle elements to both the dwelling and pool.
The clients’ brief to Aquarius Pools & Colin Hyett Design was to incorporate a generous-sized pool and spa that utilises the sloping site, while integrating seamlessly with the current home and landscape. The result is a pool and landscape area that encapsulates the typical flow of Americana into the Australian lifestyle, which is the platform for all entertaining.
The site provided some challenges for both construction and design. Ground conditions on the sloping block were problematic due to wet and unstable foundations. As a result, the pool and spa had to be fully formed. Although the complex site conditions proved to be a challenge for all trades to coordinate, a spectacular outcome was achieved.
The precise and detailed finish on the spa’s wet edge cleverly sits at the same level, while still being separate to enable spa heating. The ceramic mosaic pool tiles and Australian bluestone crazy paving blend into the rolling hills surrounding the property. This paving is randomly hand cut with mortar joins no larger than 12mm.
Clever planting and sculpted lawns enhance the 16m-long rectangular pool and surrounds.
The planting is in the style of the American stars and stripes, integrated into the existing Australian bushland.
Spa Electrics LED lights transform the pool at night and highlight the landscaping and surrounds, reflecting the colours of summer sunsets in the rolling hills beyond.
The low-maintenance pool is self-cleaning and fully automated with a variety of features. The Paramount PCC 2000 in-floor cleaning system is also fully automated so that the owners can enjoy the pool while it takes care of itself.
An inbuilt cover pit with fully automated slat cover saves a heated pool evaporating twice its volume of water every year and slashes pool heating bills by approximately two thirds. Meanwhile, the installation of two variable-speed pumps saves approximately $1000 per year each in electricity. The Aqualink in-house controller ensures the homeowners can operate the pool from their kitchen and living areas or via their iPhone from any location.
