A Balinese villa-inspired plunge pool and spa project

Hidden away in Sydney’s Annandale, a Balinese villa-inspired plunge pool and spa cleverly uses all available space

In Sydney’s inner west, space is definitely at a premium and room for a swimming pool is extremely difficult to come by. This client had a very limited space in which to build a pool and as a result came up with a dual-purpose concept that makes the most of every available centimetre for pure relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Studio Annandale designed the rectangular plunge pool and spa, known as the Annandale Balinese Retreat due to its Balinese villa-inspired appearance, to fit perfectly in the front courtyard of the townhouse. “There was very limited space,” explains Zeb Rodrigues of Artesian Pools. “Due to this, all excavation for the pool had to be done by hand.”

The pool was built right up to the front patio, with the coping at the same level to give the illusion of one open space. Frameless glass fencing was used between the spa and patio. To fit with the Balinese villa concept, the stone for the interior is green Sukabumi sourced from Bali. The pool is deep enough to be used as a plunge pool in the warmer weather and, when heated, enjoyed as a spa with spa jets and seating at one end. The Zodiac heat pump is cleverly hidden underneath the pool with the
rest of the equipment.

Multi-colour lights installed in the water and garden make the spa/plunge pool a stunning feature at night, allowing it to be admired through the large windows at the front of the townhouse and adding to the sense of tranquillity.
