This striking design makes the most of the home’s stunning waterfront location
Of fresh, contemporary design, these outdoor spaces are the perfect complement to the architecture of the house and the lifestyle of the family who call this Sydney waterfront property home.
There were three things at the top of the wish-list given to designer Dean Herald of Rolling Stone Landscapes. Number one was a modernised outdoor living area where the family could relax, enjoy the view and entertain. The second was relocating the swimming pool. A pool had sat on the lowest level but was rarely used so building a pool higher and closer to the house was vital. The third was to update the overall site, in the process providing better access down to the water’s edge. Dean’s design is refreshing (note the combination of white walls, white floors and blue pool tiles), inviting (thanks to the splash of warmth provided by the timber decking and feature panelling) and contemporary (evident in the clean sweep of the paving, pool, garden beds and lawn).
“As the site is steep the shapes in the landscape were very important as they would be often viewed from above. For me, the curved pool and its interaction with the shape of the lower lawn when viewed from the house is something truly special,” says Dean.
“Another distinctive feature is the cantilevered section of the outdoor pavilion which juts out over the poolside lounge area,” he continues. “Clad with timber panels, this provides a very architectural element within the garden.”
The interplay of materials and colours is also worthy of note. The warmth of the northern box timber decking and timber panelling (Concept Click from Woodform Architectural) offsets the light-coloured Ecolight porcelain tiles from Di Lorenzo which in turn off-set the rich colours of the plants and lawn.
“Adding an architectural element, a mature dragon tree was craned over the home and installed as a design feature. This fits in well with the two existing frangipani trees. Other plants include Japanese box, Senecio serpens and Alternanthera dentata ‘Little Ruby’. These were planted en masse to emphasise the minimalist design of the project and enhance the hard surface shapes,” explains Dean.
Equal care was taken when choosing the outdoor furniture, which was supplied by Cosh Living, and fitting out the main pavilion. This space boasts a television and outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, sink, fridge and wood-fired pizza oven. Now the owners can enjoy the complete outdoor entertaining experience.
