Peek over the fence at some of the most stylish, functional and inspirational outdoor rooms
01. CONTEMPORARY CHIC
Styled by Norsu Interiors and designed and completed by Construct Melbourne, this outdoor room invites the homeowners to bring the outdoors in during the warmer months, thanks to expansive bi-fold doors that connect the rear of the house with the outdoor room and beyond. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen guards against “hangry” water fights in the modern, white-tiled pool and spa. Visible from the poolside gym, the pool is surrounded by captivating greenery. 02. AWNING FAWNING
Sometimes, all you need is a good awning and a smattering of strategically placed furniture to create the outdoor room of your dreams. This is especially true if you are dealing with a small area. Take this space, for example, which enjoys a built-in bench, an outdoor dining table, a Luxaflex awning system and little else. Simple, elegant and functional, the modest-sized deck looks picture-perfect.
03. LONG IN THE TOOTH
Oozing luxury, this outdoor room provides superior indoor/outdoor living opportunities. Grey floor tiles and stone-clad walls define the area, which floats like a cloud. “Very early in the process, we worked with the builder (Douglas Construction) and engineer to explore building options for a house, yard and heated pool on a raised suspended concrete slab,” says DAH Architecture director and architect, David Hansford. “This gave us the opportunity to extend the expansive open-plan living into a landscaped yard with seamless transitions.” Complete with cooking facilities and ample bench space, the outdoor room is accessed using the 3m timber sliding doors off the kitchen and dining area. 04. OUTSIDE THE BOX
Palm Springs comes to Victoria’s iconic Mount Martha with this transformed beach box, made over in 2020 with swathes of Tint exterior paint. With a setting like this, the outdoor covered section of the beach box needed very little, proving that simplicity is often the key to successful outdoor rooms. Originally built in the 1950s, the structure has a Liquorice Allsorts vibe with its delectable stripes. Complementing the colour palette is a simple setup featuring a modern armchair, cushions and side table. Photography by Lisa Atkinson.
05. BACKYARD OASIS
The Agape 2021 bathware collection from Artedomus offers a whole new form of self-care by transforming the backyard into a relaxing spa retreat. Bringing the brand’s most popular indoor products to the great outdoors, Agape’s mission to elevate the bathing experience is achieved through technology and innovation. One piece of particular interest is Diego Merendi’s Petra washbasin, which has been intricately reworked with re-cast concrete to mimic stone, adding stylish appeal to alfresco dining settings.
06. A FAN OF NEDLANDS
Developed by luxury homebuilder Zorzi and overhauled by interior designer Benjamin Webb, this Western Australian outdoor room in the prestigious suburb of Nedlands is perfect for entertaining. An organic palette is loaded with moody, earthy tones such as brown and black. The space enjoys a masculine feel with travertine flooring and a statement ceiling fan that completes the scene with style and sophistication. Photography by Joel Barbitta (D-Max Photography).
