Enmore entertainer: a responsive inner-west courtyard

Gallery

This space was designed and built to provide the privacy, entertainment and functionality the homeowners desperately required of their inner-city Enmore residence

The result of a clever design by GOODMANORS Pool + Garden, the space in this Enmore home now boasts an impressive alfresco area, outdoor lighting and a sleek and unexpected plunge pool. The well-executed outdoor space not only offers room for wining, dining and swimming, but also provides the practicality of hidden built-in storage for the pool equipment, dryer and bins, plus a secure parking space for the resident’s car.

To maximise the tight space, it was decided the pool would sit right on the boundary, with the rendered blockwork rising out of the pool as the boundary barrier. High-level consideration at the design stage, and complexity in construction technique, ensured an elegant solution to the pool fencing boundary was achieved. Importantly, the footings were contained on the client’s property. The pool’s positioning allowed for increased safety, with the neat glass fencing, which meets the NSW Pool Boundary Regulation, allowing a direct and unobstructed view from the house.

The use of natural materials around the pool deck, including spotted gum hardwood decking, bluestone coping and cedar vertical slatted feature walls, all provide interesting textural focal points from the house. Additionally, natural paving, walling and coping were carefully chosen to create a seamless connection. Colouration of the space makes the pool the main feature of the landscape, complementing the existing architecture and style of the house and interior. The pool is fully tiled in Bisazza mosaics.
Tropical plants were chosen to enhance the resort-style feel of the space, particularly in the raised beds. They also give the clients further privacy while the pool and deck are in use. The climbing species bougainvillea, star jasmine and Boston ivy create depth and provide appeal with organic lines and growth patterns. Philodendron ‘Xanadu’, Silver Lady ferns, bromeliads and frangipani give the pool and garden area instant lushness and soften the angles of the structural elements within the space.

This well-executed outdoor area not only offers room for wining, dining and swimming, but also provides an integrated secure parking space for the resident’s car. Hidden neatly under and behind the barbecue bench space is the pool equipment, the recycling bins and an outdoor undercover laundry area, all accessed from the carport level. Atmospheric lighting of the space was an integral part of the brief and extends usage of the area into the evening.
