Sydney dream home: a seamless luxury build

Realising years of planning, a Sydney family of four build their luxury dream home from the ground up

South Coogee is a Sydney suburb that’s full of perks. Located a hop, skip and a jump away from the beach and the city, it offers the best of both worlds for those who want it all. It was here that a family of four decided to create their dream home, so they called on the expertise of Starr Constructions to bring their vision to life.

Originally an old brick house, the building was demolished to make way for an entirely new structure. The brief revolved around designing a dream home that was open and luxurious in nature while boasting a seamless flow between all the rooms. Like most projects, this new build encountered a few challenges that were overcome with a combination of experience and clever thinking. “The site was steep and narrow, which made it difficult to work with,” says Nino Sanzari, director of Starr Constructions. “However, with many years of building experience, this was not the first time we worked with a narrow site.”

The body of work included a garage, foyer, powder room, guest/study room, open living and dining space, a kitchen, laundry, bathroom, rumpus room, two bedrooms and a master bedroom with walk-in robe, ensuite and a balcony that overlooks the ocean.

Inspiration for the design came from years of research paired with the goal to create a timeless interior that would never date. “The palette is very neutral and features a range of greys, whites and browns,” says Jon Vithoulka, director of Starr Constructions. “It is fresh and comfortable with an open atmosphere.”

The heart of the home is the living, dining and kitchen space, which is open and fluid in design. Grey tiled flooring complements the white walls and cabinetry in the kitchen, which ensures continuity. Timber furnishings bring warmth to the space and carefully curated artwork provides a dash of colour and excitement.

Continuing the neutral theme, the master bedroom also features a minimalist colour palette that puts shades of grey front and centre. The space is a cocoon of comfort and luxury, with textiles overlapping to create a unique room made for relaxation. The ensuite follows a similar aesthetic, with floor-to-ceiling grey tiling juxtaposing against the matt black fixtures. The inclusion of two basins ensures there’s plenty of room for the owners to use the space at the same time.

Bursting with natural light and a contemporary atmosphere, this South Coogee home is exactly what the owners wanted — it combines practicality with a sense of style that’s all about longevity.
