With a nod to its natural surroundings, this home provides a space to be proud of for its new homeowners
This sleek design was a second submission from Tecton Group in the NSW MBA awards. Despite being knocked off top spot in the Design and Construct $1–$2 million category by a home also built by Tecton Group, this home is undoubtedly still worthy of mention.
Described by Tecton Group as “triggering the intrigue of visitors and an expression of the family who resides within it”, this project is a sophisticated creation that the family proudly resides in.This abode is a custom-built and very personal creation, intended to reflect the personalities of those who live within it while also being extremely practical and appealing to the eye.
The unique location of the site — in particular, being opposite the heritage conservation area of Leo Smith Reserve — was reflected in the design. The land is 898m2 and had an old single-storey fibro cottage and garage with roof tiles on the site prior to re-build, which was demolished to accommodate this new striking design.
The new dwelling is two storeys, with an attached double car garage, in-ground swimming pool, alfresco area and outbuilding at the rear. The grand entry provides access to the dwelling, opening up to a foyer with a theatre room to the north and study, powder room, laundry, pantry, and kitchen to the south, followed by an open-plan dining and living area. Stair access is provided to the first floor whilst the kitchen, dining and living area look out to an alfresco area, outdoor swimming pool, garden area, outbuilding and storage at the rear.
The living areas are situated on the ground floor in order to provide continuity from the indoor living areas through to the outdoor entertaining area. Heading up to the first floor, you will find four bedrooms, a lounge, two ensuites and two balconies providing privacy and also respite.
The build was sensitive to its neighbouring Leo Smith Reserve, firstly capitalising on the views out over the reserve from the master bedroom and secondly ensuring that the materials used on the facade of the home gave a nod to the natural surroundings. Timber was originally proposed, but as the homeowners are a young couple with limited time on their hands, Tecton Group opted for Alucabond cladding, which is easier to maintain. A natural timber colour and pattern was still applied, though.
The swimming pool is a remarkable feature of the home in that it was designed to be adjacent to the living areas and in a highly visible spot. It was intended to be a feature in itself and lights up the living spaces with natural light that reflects through the home, echoing the natural aspects that were important to the homeowners.
