Family life in a Queenslander home means embracing the delight of lazy lunches on shady verandahs and finding joy in the unmatched look of rich timbers
It’s a lifestyle that suits thousands of homeowners and, more and more, others are discovering its many benefits. Garth Chapman’s Traditional Queenslanders is indeed providing for a market that is growing like never before. A western Brisbane family, who came from England four years ago, had a wish list of requirements for their new home. They chose Garth Chapman’s The Ascot as the primary design, changing it only to allow for larger bedrooms and a spacious home office.
The Ascot sits splendidly at the front of the family’s bushy two hectares, which stretches far up the hill on a narrow block. Central timber stairs lead up to the higher-than-usual portico with decorative gable frieze. A full-length front verandah wraps around the side of the house to offer masses of outdoor living space. Large bay windows dress up each end of the home, enhancing the grand colonial façade with its paperbark Colorbond roof, white exterior and heritage-green trims.
Warm surian cedar frames the entry door and French doors leading to the front verandah. A wide hallway with select-grade mixed hardwood polished floors and overhead decorative archway gives a genuine, old-fashioned welcome. To the right is the spacious formal dining room leading out to the family room with its traditional, mantelpiece-topped fireplace. Double cedar doors open to reveal ample outdoor living space which overlooks the in-ground pool and tennis court. This area connects to the front verandah via wide wraparound verandahs.
To the left of the hallway, a large home office satisfies the owners’ needs. The long hallway gives access to three bedrooms and the main bathroom with powder nook. An appealing ensuite to the master bedroom features a glass-framed corner shower and a natural, earthy colour scheme. This bedroom also adjoins a balcony, perfect for private relaxation. Decorative bedroom breezeways encourage fresh air circulation and carry on the heritage styling.
Garth Chapman’s Traditional Queenslanders is renowned for inspiring the faithful reproduction of traditional Australian architectural homes with all their stylish attributes. These magnificent homes are distinctive in design and perfect for the Australian climate.
