Backing onto bushland and perched atop a sloping block, this kit home is the perfect fit for the site and the family
A steeply sloping building site presents both challenges and opportunities. Here, the drop affords the rear of the home beautiful bushland views and a feeling of being among the treetops. The sharp fall of the 20-acre site, however, meant that to safely build the home, some clever engineering would be required.
Having decided they wanted a kit home, the owners — a young Queensland family — started searching online. They found their way to the Imagine Kit Homes’ website where they were struck by the wide range of designs and floor plans; also the level of customisation available.
They were particularly impressed by the epic designs. However, they knew it would need some modification to suit their block of land. Of course, Imagine Kit Homes was happy to oblige. “This was a difficult site so the home had to be designed to follow the natural contours of the land,” explains Keith Richardson, Imagine Kit Homes’ General Manager.
“The block of land also sat in a bushfire zone so the home was fully customised to not just meet the clients’ lifestyle needs but also the site requirements and building regulations. We oversaw the entire process, from custom design and engineering through to certification, manufacturing, delivery and construction support.”
Modern entertainment
The home the family dared to imagine is an impressive one. It boasts everything the modern family needs, including a theatre room and a home office. Imagine Kit Homes adds a spectacular double-sided fireplace to create a focal point. This creates a feature wall that delineates the lounge and dining areas. In addition, it also provides warmth and ambience when the family gathers together or entertains.
“When you enter the home, the theatre room, with its suspended ceiling, sits to the right. To the left is the formal lounge which opens to the family and dining area,” says Keith. “There are also four generous bedrooms, including a guest bedroom with an ensuite and built-in robe which is located at the front. Bedrooms two and three flank a family bathroom and were placed to one side of the home while, for privacy, the master bedroom is on the other side. And as this is a family-friendly design, in addition to the theatre room there is an activity area and a computer nook.”
For year-round entertaining, there is a balcony that’s big enough to have separate alfresco dining and lounge areas. The balcony also allows the homeowners to benefit from the stunning bushland view. Above all, the decking boards add visual warmth and the glass balustrade ensures the vista remains unobstructed.
Dealing with a sloping site
To deal with the slope of the site, the house was built using an elevated floor system and concrete slab. It’s important to ensure that the house meets the requirements of Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) 29. With an eye on sustainability, the home features an off-grid solar power system.
The home’s facade is modern and striking. It features raked rooflines and a combination of exterior cladding materials. These features give the abode a contemporary look while ensuring it fits comfortably and unobtrusively into its semi-rural Redland Bay.
