The brief
A humble, “beachy” holiday home for a retired couple. As well as accommodating the kids and grandkids, the residence needed to have a strong connection to nature and tie in with the laidback community of Bendalong.
Design outcomes
A modest, single-level living pavilion on the street side draws on the simplicity of surrounding beach houses, many of which were owner-built over the years. This also makes sure that neighbouring homes’ views are not obstructed. Operable timber screens allow for the control of privacy and when the whole house is opened up, it almost disappears, inducing the idea of camping.

While the original brief was for a holiday home, the homeowners have decided to make Bendalong Beach House their forever home.
