Nestled in beachside Melbourne, this home has been transformed by designer Catherine Morgan, with her vision skillfully executed by custom builder Gaia Construction.
Once a modest abode with outdated interiors and a peculiar floor plan, it now offers a harmonious balance of form and function.
Revitalised to embrace and optimise its embodied energy, the home includes a significant rear extension featuring a grand living area with a cathedral ceiling. The Commercial Series Raked Max Lite Window consists of custom-designed frames that follow the ceiling’s pitch, spanning nearly 5 meters in length and soaring over 4 meters in height. Vertical mullions draw the eye to the exposed rafters, extending beyond the home’s canopy to the outdoor entertaining space, creating a seamless flow between the living room and the rear garden and pool, effectively merging indoor and outdoor living.
The north elevation features a series of highlight Fixed and Electric Awning Operator Windows, flooding the kitchen and dining area with natural light along a 10-meter stretch. The kitchen island, adorned with natural stone in ice green and horizontal timber battens on the vertical face, is beautifully illuminated by the diffused light, adding elegance to the functional workspace.
In the dining area, a 6.7m² Commercial Series Max Lite window provides unobstructed views of the sparkling pool, while a 3-panel Commercial Series Stacker Door opens to the alfresco space. The door’s rebated sill ensures a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor areas, perfect for both entertaining and everyday living.
French Doors on the opposite side of the home invite natural light and offer a harmonious flow throughout the space. The rear playroom features a Commercial Series Sliding Door that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces for versatile and adaptive use.
The exterior vertical cladding, in a bold black and white palette, continues throughout the rear extension. The ceilings, painted white inside and out, enhance the home’s lofty spaces and vaulted design. The neutral palette is warmed by oak timber flooring and hardwood timber decking, creating a timeless and inviting atmosphere.
Inside, the home exudes luxury with extensive built-in cabinetry in the drinks bar and study areas. The bathrooms, meticulously designed and constructed, reflect careful consideration, contributing to the overall sense of refined sophistication.
The design prioritises natural light, atmospheric illumination, and soaring spaces. Light highlights the textured materials and thoughtful design elements, creating an inviting and luminous living environment. This reimagined residence exemplifies the harmonious blend of form and function, offering a serene and luxurious retreat for its occupants. These elements not only provide access and light but also create a living experience that is open, connected, and in tune with the natural surroundings. This home, with its timeless design and meticulous attention to detail, stands as a shining example of how thoughtful architecture can transform an existing home into a serene sanctuary.
