A home with a view

Set on stilts, this modified Trafalgar home makes the most of a picturesque landscape

Owners Richard and Alison moved from Tasmania to Western Australia and were planning on building their dream home on 2.4 hectares of land. However, says Richard, “The cost of building was exorbitant, so we started looking at alternatives.”

They loved Kitome’s website and, after speaking to the staff, they flew to Victoria to see the display homes and decided on a modified Trafalgar. “We really liked the look and layout of Trafalgar as it suited the area we would build in. We live in a rural zone, so we wanted a home that had that comfortable country feel.”

After deciding on the Trafalgar, it was time to make a few modifications to suit their needs. Both Richard and Alison were extremely impressed by Kitome’s staff, who took the time to listen to their ideas and then helped them draft a home based on their needs and budget. They are over the moon with the final product.

Their home overlooks a national park at the back and there is a picturesque dam at the front, so naturally Richard and Alison wanted to make the most of the views from their property. They decided to build the house on stilts to better enjoy the panorama. “Because we decided on stilts we couldn’t have a garage, so we maximised our views by adding a wraparound verandah, which measures three metres wide on the entertaining side,” said Richard.

The end result is an inviting, practical, open-plan home with large living rooms and a spacious kitchen that is brimming with warmth and charm, plus the added verandah makes it ideal for entertaining. The flooring is a combination of Tasmanian oak floorboards, carpet in the bedrooms and formal lounge, and tiles in the wet areas. The kitchen features Black Pearl granite benchtops and stainless-steel appliances.

What is amazing given the size of the home is that it took only four months to build! According to Richard, “Because everything is on site, there is no downtime waiting for supplies. We hired two young lads to help us out and the four of us just went for it. We did everything ourselves except the electrical and plumbing.”
