Relaxed living: Contemporary white kitchen

Gallery

Contrasting sleek white surfaces and timber flooring, this contemporary yet relaxed kitchen design is a living at its finest

“This young family has moved to Sydney’s North Shore to a classic Federation bungalow. Their kitchen looks over the backyard and is open plan to the dining and living areas.

The owners chose to incorporate rustic French features such as antique French doors, a beautiful marble mantelpiece and French oak floorboards. The kitchen needed to be sympathetic with these while being the perfect space for a cook with a family heritage of fine cooking. The relatively simple mantel area gives a traditional focal point without boxing in the cooking area.

There is plenty of bench space either side of the cooking range and the flanking glass doors lighten the look. I love the Shaker-style posts defining the breakfast bar and the grooved panelling with traditional proud kickboards.

To incorporate a breakfast bar we adopted a traditional U-shape for the kitchen.”
