Make your kitchen the focal point of your home with an extra-wide island
While some people lack a large kitchen area, having too much empty space in the centre of the room can be a real problem for others. If you have too much room to move why not look at a wide island, such as the one designed specifically for the kitchen featured here. This wide island is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides an invaluable function — extra preparation space and extra seating space for those busy kitchen occasions. Designing this wide island, however, was not without its challenges. “We had to build the kitchen around a structured post on the side of the kitchen island,” a spokesperson from Urban Kitchens, the company behind the building of this kitchen, says. This challenge was overcome by having the post slightly off-centre in the island and having the benches finished in Hanex Risotto, fabricated by Cook and Nation. The use of light colours also
helps the post blend in with the rest of the light-coloured kitchen.
This light colour is a far cry from the tired, 1980s Laminex kitchen that once stood here — the room has undergone a complete transformation. One other thing Urban Kitchens had to keep in mind when morphing this kitchen from dated to divine was the owners’ desire for more storage. “They loved Urban Kitchens’ designs and wanted lots of drawers and pantry efficiency,” the
Urban Kitchens team says. Clearly, Urban Kitchens has helped the home owners realise their dream with a kitchen that features multiple storage
points and a feature island — a handy addition to any home.
