Offering a contemporary take on classic country style, this beautifully bright kitchen in a space-challenged, inner-Melbourne home successfully bridges the gap between period cottage charm and 21st-century functionality.
As you would expect of a kitchen in an older dwelling, the space was rather gloomy, storage was in short supply, and the overall look was a bit passé. This presented Direct Kitchens with numerous challenges, chief among them bringing in more light and updating the cabinetry to provide ample storage, as well as seamlessly accommodating modern appliances. This, however, had to be achieved while remaining true to the character of the home.
The Shaker-profile thermolaminated cabinetry conjures timeless country style and echoes the room’s original period-style cornices. For a sleek, modern look the cabinetry is paired with white, clean-lined engineered stone benchtops. For contrast while reinforcing the modern aesthetic, the island features a black sink and mixer tap teamed with black drawers and panelling.
Traditional country elements add visual interest and layers of texture. This can be seen in the ornate handles used for drawers and wall cabinets, and the patterned, pressed tin-style subway tile splashback. Even more texture is introduced courtesy of the fluted glass pendant lights.
While the pendants help to brighten the space, the creation of a new window, which doubles as a splashback in the preparation nook, welcomes in much-needed natural light and has proven to be an inspired inclusion. In another inspired move, a concealed laundry was integrated into the design of the kitchen, ensuring this is a multi-functional space that is equipped for the demands of modern life – one with a contemporary country mien that will weather the passage of time.
