Daring and different

To ensure your kitchen makes a statement, you may need to make it bold and unique

Many kitchens fall prey to looking run-of-the-mill. You know the type: boring benchtop, plain cupboards, no features or accessories. Sometimes you need to take a risk to make your kitchen go from same to sensational, like the owners of this kitchen have done.
“The owners wanted something a little different and daring,” Phil O’Brien from Designer Kitchens, the company which made this striking room, says. Their brief was to create an open-plan kitchen with a central island and a modern look that would be remembered.
“The island was to be the focal point and the client was feeling adventurous — hence the end result,” Phil says. Adventurous they certainly were, choosing a bright green gloss laminate to highlight the doors of the island bench.
This highlight certainly works with the modern look of the kitchen, and focusing on the cabinets draws attention to the excellent use of storage space that this kitchen employs. It’s not often you see an island bench with storage on all sides, as this one has.
However, the island bench isn’t the only storage option for this new kitchen. “There’s also a utility-room-cum-pantry to store a host of crockery and food, helping to make the kitchen uncluttered,” Phil says.
Keeping the space uncluttered was key, especially taking into consideration the relatively small area that this kitchen encompasses. Yet by using the island,
a feeling of space is created and with storage options cleverly thought out, the kitchen makes good use of its available area.
With a good use of space, a contemporary design and a striking colour scheme, this kitchen is one the owners will not tire of in a hurry.
