Melbourne Contemporary Kitchens show us how gloss and mirrored surfaces can help to reflect space and light in tight areas.
“The client was keen to have a mix of colour and texture against the white backdrop and pop of orange. We chose a nice neutral and earthy mix of light and dark gloss cabinets and a linear, textured laminate for both sides of the island bench plus an aluminium trim and kickboards. It was difficult to find a veneer to match the timber flooring so, instead, we made the fixed dining table from scratch from MDF that we clad in the exact same floorboards, finished with an aluminium trim so that there were no sharp edges and to match the trim used elsewhere. It’s a tight space so, besides using gloss finishes to help reflect space and light, we positioned a bronze mirror on the wall that runs the same length as the island to add depth to the space. There’s lots of accessible storage in the pantry next to the fully integrated fridge and in the overhead cabinets with mechanical levers, while small appliances are tucked away behind the door at the end of the benchtop. There’s a great stereo system wired throughout the house so we created a dedicated nook for the DJ turntable and other equipment hidden behind the main cabinet wall.”
