A family of four and their resident canine wanted a light, bright and functional kitchen.
They were living in a bungalow in leafy Clarence Gardens in South Australia and were in dire need of a new kitchen. The existing space was lacklustre and had cupboards with chocolate-brown fronts. Moreover, the layout was impractical and a corner pantry was not space efficient.
Shane and Kerrie, the owners, are friends of Nathan and Ellen Wundersitz of SpaceCraft Joinery and the design collaboration evolved on a relaxed Sunday afternoon. As the wine came pouring out, so did the inspiration. Kerrie had a pile of it — a whole Pinterest page full. Basically, what that boiled down to were four key elements: her main colour was a sage choice (a lovely tranquil sage), plus she wanted curves, open shelving and ribbing detail. Everything that Nathan and Ellen also love in a kitchen! The final product, as with all SpaceCraft Joinery’s kitchens, is a showstopper.
There is much to admire in this beautiful, practical kitchen that has all the bells and whistles and plenty of charm, from the cupboards in two-pack painted satin finish and the half-round timber ribbing to the island back and return with its leg detail. The ribbing conceals three push-to-open doors on the island back. Custom notch-out handle details with American oak veneer inserts provide an extra timber pop. It also adds warmth and a beautiful texture.
Open shelving affords the opportunity to invite in nature with leafy plants and select decor. The existing corner pantry was removed and in its place a blind corner pantry and another double door now frame the fridge. Kerrie wanted the same geometric style for their splashbacks as Ellen has in her kitchen, and that was easily done.
The final effect of all this is a kitchen that is glorious, harmonious, cool and uncluttered. Like a duck on a pond, you can barely see a ripple on the surface. But underneath there’s plenty going on, with all those appliances hidden out of sight but ready for action at the push of a door.
