A Hamptons Style Update on a Modern Kitchen

Gallery

“The Hamptons style is a popular design choice for all areas of a home because of the casual, elegant and coastal calm it reflects.

In a bit of a role-reversal, the owners wanted to “down-date” the early 21st-century modernity of their original kitchen and inject character and flair by introducing the more decorative Hamptons style.

By keeping the colour scheme minimal and using ocean-inspired gunmetal blue for the island bench, a light and airy atmosphere of relaxed beachside living was achieved. Dado panelling was used on cabinets, doors and bench bottoms to really ramp-up the Hamptons feel, with the island bench featuring deep-profile forward skirting and diamond-topped pilasters.

In terms of design considerations, the low-lying ceiling meant the traditional Hamptons-style cabinet mouldings in the kitchen had to be excluded. Yet, by using transparent glass for overhead cabinetry and shortened pendant lights, an illusion of extra headroom was created.

The clients’ wish for a butler’s pantry meant the whole kitchen needed reconfiguring, with the construction of a new wall in which to house a very functional pantry space.”
