A Calming Space that Blends Cohesively with the Surrounding Environment

You get the sense that nature had a hand in selecting the colours, textures and surfaces of this well-thought-out kitchen, and it’s no accident.

Owned by high-profile Greens Senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, the creation of a calming space blending cohesively with the surrounding environment was, quite naturally, part of the design mandate.

Improved storage, a more user-friendly configuration and the creation of an uncluttered entertainment zone, in keeping with the original feel of the Mid-Century split-level home, were also important design considerations. To that end, the blue-green and brown tones of the hillside landscape were drawn indoors with the incorporation of cabinetry in Laminex Spinifex and open walnut timber-look shelving.

Low-profile J-pull hands were selected to streamline the look and, while the existing kitchen footprint was maintained, new appliances were cleverly repositioned to create counterspace on the back wall. Here a retro smoked-mirror splashback reflects the view from outside, and a Staron benchtop in Aspen Concrete houses an undermount sink with curvy feature mixer and offers room for a coffee machine.

Given its ability to cover the impressive 3.8m span without joins, Staron was an obvious choice for the island too, but here the designer opted for a playful look in Mosaic Dalmatian. Warm to the touch, and easy to clean and maintain, the surface adds to the functionality of the space. It also plays host to an integrated cooktop, fitted with a downdraft exhaust, incorporated to make the most of that stunning natural view.
