Fancy yourself the creative type? NOMI produces custom furniture tweaked by you

Michael Grassi, Henry Gresson and Tomek Archer are NOMI. Founded in 2013, the Sydney start-up harnesses your inner designer online and delivers your vision to your doorstep. Offering a solution to those design dilemmas that plague us all, NOMI has put an end to agonising over furniture that’s an unsightly colour, strange size or just plain wrong, offering a range of designer base models that can be altered to perfectly fit your space.

Supplying designer furniture that’s a happy medium between inferior-quality pieces and those that are in the thousands, the NOMI trio has produced a clever line that appeals to those who appreciate good design at a fair price.

So how does it all work? Head to NOMI’s website and you will find the design studio, which is where the fun begins. It comprises a collection of tables, chairs and shelves. Simply select your desired piece and click away to change the colour, size and finishes. And you can keep an eye on your budget, with the price adjusted according to the level of customisation you’re lashing out on that locally made piece.

With environmental considerations forming a strong foundation of NOMI’s design agenda, the selection of materials and how they are packaged and assembled is key. “I aim to optimise efficiencies in production and shipping and try to design products that will last,” says Tomek. “It’s important to consider how they can be recycled, repurposed, renovated or put back in the ground.” NOMI’s joinery is just one of the many things about the brand to be admired, with pieces constructed using nothing more than a coin — pure convenience, if you’ve got spare change, that is.

With a firm focus on innovation, NOMI is just getting started. By providing the essentials when it comes to furnishing your home, the fact you can up the ante on the basics is an appealing concept to those of us who appreciate the customised things in life.
