What is it about classic Parisian style that grabs the design hearts of clients and designers alike? One look into the Prahran residence, with its chic Parisian minimal style, epitomised by the parquet timber floors, infused into the century-old terrace, and you have your answer.
Situated in the Melbourne inner-city suburb of the same name, the Prahan residence elegantly combines minimal beauty and negative space, with rich aesthetic details that speak to the individualism of the owner.
“Our concept focused on opening the space as much as possible, to create a natural flow from the kitchen into the living and dining zones,” said Design Studio Biasol.
“With every element configured to maximise space and functionality, this open-plan area became the hub for the family to gather.”
High ceilings provide abundant space and light, with white joinery cabinets providing ample space to keep the kitchen clutter free. The crisp Carrara marble island benchtop features a bullnose edge detail. The black joinery matches the functional sculptural kitchen centrepiece: the premium Lacanche oven and cooktop.
The monochromatic colour palette of the kitchen continues into the living area, carried by the elegant European oak timber floor. Like the emerald green highlights of the minimalist furniture, that offset the living room monochrome in stunning detail, the chevron parquet styling of the European oak timber flooring is essential to adding detail and texture to the space.
“The Parquet chevron floor pattern was inspired by the chic Parisian style, we wanted to bring an element of class into the fit out and really showcase the floors which seamlessly complimented the kitchen joinery features and archway entrance corridor.”
The arched throughway to the kitchen speaks to the history of the original house, while the fitted steel-framed door ensures the old is reinvigorated with modern features. It’s ‘très Parisien’ in its beautiful simplicity.
The restoration of original arched fireplaces in the bedrooms, and the use of sheer curtains to bring soft light into the living and dining areas speak of the thought of design that has made the home able to incorporate threads of minimalist, Parisian and modern design trends with ease.
Luxe in its minimalism, and homely in its homage to Paris, this is a paradox of design executed with refinement and elegance. As a prime example of modern Parisian aesthetic, it’s everything we’ve come to expect.
