With a small, dark and cramped existing laundry, principal designer, Verona from Avid Interior Design saw an opportunity to reconfigure the layout of the home to create a new laundry that would be spacious, light-filled and cater to the needs of a busy family with teens.
Winner Laundries National
The home’s north-west facing spare room was an ideal location for the new laundry. With a glass sliding door offering natural light, ventilation and access to a side deck for additional drying space, it was the perfect solution. The entry was moved to the centre of the room to accommodate a sliding door so cabinetry could be installed on both sides. The cabinetry was designed to provide ample storage space around the appliances, with overhead cupboards built up to the raked ceiling and the inclusion of a hanging rail overhead for more drying space when needed.
With the garage and back door of the property located right next to the new laundry, incorporating a small mudroom space at the entry of the room, with bench seat, hooks for hats and bags, shoe storage and clothes hamper, has created a much-needed space for keeping school and sporting gear neatly organised and hidden away.
The inclusion of an LED strip light into the overhead shelf of the bench seat acts as a subtle night light to keep the storage areas visible when needed late at night. There’s even a charging station for phones and laptops conveniently located in a drawer. The result has been a gamechanger for the family, with everyone feeling catered for in the new space.
This project won the KBDI Design Awards 2024 in the National Laundries category. The KBDI Design Awards program is a prestigious annual event that showcases Australia’s top kitchen and bathroom designers.
