We explore how Cosh Living made over the heritage listed Bendigo Street building.
The Bendigo Street building started life as the Wertheim Piano Factory. The factory, opened in 1908, was formerly the largest piano factory in Australia; employing 300 workers and producing approximately 2,000 pianos per year.
In March 1935, the Bendigo Street building underwent its second transformation. As a tinned food factory, its new owner Heinz was producing over 13 million cans per year by 1948. Despite adding more floor space to the building, they eventually outgrew Bendigo Street and sold the site to the General Television Corporation in 1955. From 1957 – 2011 it soon became known as ‘Television City’, becoming the filming location for TV shows such as In Melbourne Tonight, The Footy Show (AFL) and Hey, Hey It’s Saturday.
More recently, the iconic red brick building on Bendigo Street has undergone a $400 million dollar redevelopment. The new Studio Nine townhouses are a modern interpretation of the much loved terrace houses found in Melbourne’s inner suburbs.
Exploring the new Bendigo Street Building
The beauty of the new yet classic interior design by Kerstin Thompson Architects is that it gives the residents freedom to express themselves by building upon an on-trend neutral colour palette. This made it the perfect location for Kett furniture’s very first residential photo shoot.
Designer Justin Hutchinson and the Kett team created a breakfast scene in line with their new campaign ‘Inside Looking Out’. Floor to ceiling glass doors helped the morning sun pour inside the room. Consequently, the open plan living area was a warm and welcoming space and a place to enjoy a bite to eat or the summer breeze.
Incorporating gentle forms, soft linen fabrics and natural timber tones from the Otway Sofa and Entertainment Unit lifted the room. The Johanna Occasional Chair is visually light and deceptively compact, a standout with its distinct silhouette and the perfect addition to this incredible interior.
Just outside the featured room, the Aireys Woven Armchair and coffee table stands out amongst the greenery. The cosy outdoor cushions upholstered in Sunbrella Blend Sage fabric invite residents outdoors for a quiet retreat.
Artwork from Studio Gallery Melbourne, accessories from Cone 11 Ceramics, lamp from Euroluce Lighting and rug from Halcyon Lake completed the look.
