The Blend Concrete Design team has had the pleasure of handcrafting concrete pieces for many beautiful, lavish, and cutting-edge projects.
When the team reflects on their favourite past projects, a popular mention is Aurelien Berson Construction’s Norman Park residence. For this project, Blend handcrafted and installed several chic, modern concrete pieces.
This project feature will take a closer look at the beautiful custom concrete pieces Blend created for Aurelien’s home. Read on to learn more about the design and production processes behind the following featured pieces:
- Custom modular outdoor seating
- A bespoke rectangular bath; and
- A gorgeous 5 metre indoor planter box
Perched on a hill overlooking views of Brisbane city, the exterior of this breathtaking modern home features contrasting colours, thriving greenery and high-quality finishes. Combining traditional and modern styling, this home showcases a beautiful blend of materials and an artfully balanced design.
Aurelien and his designer Ashley, founder of AM Interior Studio, approached the Blend Concrete Design team to collaborate on several custom concrete pieces for a new development.
Custom Modular Outdoor Seating
The client proposed the design for a light-coloured outdoor concrete seating, perfect for enjoying the city’s captivating sunsets. Ashley, proposed a design with soft curves and a comfortable sloping backrest which framed the corner of the garden.
At Blend Concrete Design, we specialise in Glass Fibre Reinforce Concrete (GFRC), which is the ideal material for outdoor seating. The additive nature of its fabrication allows us to create complex curves and our high quality sealants protect it from the elements.
A sense of balance is created through the use of complementary materials and textures.
The soft curves and light coloured concrete of the seats, contrasts the dark tones used on the exterior of the home.
The seat was poured in eight separate pieces to allow the installation team to carry the pieces into place. Whilst it was challenging to navigate the many stairs leading up to the final location, the reward of seeing overall affect of these dreamy seats is well worth it.
A Bespoke Rectangular Bath
The client was looking for a sleek rectangular bath to feature in a monochromatic modern bathroom. Inspired by the clean look of crisp lines and sharp edges the Blend Concrete Design team handcrafted this captivating concrete bath.
The bath features a sizeable ledge at one end which is not only aesthetically beautiful but also practical. Whether you need a spot to rest your glass of wine or somewhere to sit whilst you bath the kids, is a subtle yet valuable feature.
The light-coloured concrete of the bath works to complement the monochromatic hues used in the space. The smooth satin finish of the GFRC adds contrast to the texture of the rendered floor and walls.
The Blend Concrete Design team is dedicated to producing products that can be loved for a lifetime. As a part of this commitment, we consider the short and long-term factors which may impact the life of your piece. For this bath the Blend team focused on perfecting the ‘fall’ in the bath. It’s important for there to be sufficient ‘fall’ in the bottom of the bath so that the water can drain properly. When water sits in a concrete bath for extended periods of time, due to poor drainage, it increases the chance of greater wear on the sealer and concrete discolouration. Experience and an attention to detail allowed Blend to create just enough fall for proper drainage, whilst not compromising the aesthetic of the bath’s crisp straight lines.
5 metre indoor planter box
Blend created a gorgeous 5 metre long planter box to be featured in the living space. This stunning planter box incorporates greenery into the space whilst also acting as a soft room divider.
Handcrafted from a dark charcoal concrete, this simple yet beautiful concrete piece works cohesively with the colour scheme of the home. The hue of the planter box is bold and moody making the perfect statement piece for the space.
The soft slope in the bottom of the planter box allows for proper drainage which is important for keeping plants happy and healthy.
Due to the size the piece had to be carefully craned on site and carried into position. Once installed, the planter box was finished with a venetian render to add a light texture to the piece.
Delving into the details of this project, it’s easy to see why it was a highlight for many members of the Blend team. From complex design challenges to stunning installation view, this project had it all! It was fantastic to work alongside a passion team to produce a series of incredible and one of a kind concrete pieces.
