Colour psychology and art

Which colour do you need in your life, in your home?

Renowned psychiatrist, Carl Jung, encouraged his patients to use colour to access and express some of the deeper parts of their psyche.  We may all be doing this subconsciously in our everyday lives with our colour choices of clothes, food, furnishings and our draw to the ocean or forest for healing and wellbeing.

Outback Magic By Amber Gittins

At different times in our lives, we will be drawn to different colours, their subtle energies effecting our bodies, minds and emotions. When analysing the qualities of colours, it helps to consider the natural elements and our connection to them. Generally red, orange and yellow are warming and stimulating like fire and the sun, whereas blue, purple and green are calming and refreshing like the sky and rolling hills.

In our environment and home colour can nourish our well-being. If you have been feeling a bit low in energy, try adding RED tones to your home and diet, if you are feeling restless and anxious try adding calming BLUES and GREENS to ease the tension in the mind and body.  If you have been feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated you may even want to remove excess colour and shift the focus to subtle textures and artworks.

 Personal Colour Symbolism

Your personal interpretation and response to a colour will be partly derived from your experiences and culture, for example red is considered ‘lucky’ in Chinese culture, and you may love pale blue because it reminds you of your Gran’s tablecloth. Beyond any guided list is how you respond individually, FEELING is the key – is it the right colour for you?
