O’Shea & Sons Builders presents The Mesa, a project highlighting biophilic design to strengthen the connection between occupants, nature, and wellbeing.
A key element of this project is the collaboration between Maree O’Shea, Creative Director, and Robyn Kirk, a Brisbane artist and former gallery director, whose combined creativity enhanced the design’s aesthetic and natural harmony.
The Mesa: Spanish Revival Meets Modern Design in a Captivating Ambiance
Annually, OSB Property owners Nick and Carly O’Shea present a distinctive property to the market, crafted by their building company, O’Shea & Sons Builders. This year, they are featuring The Mesa, part of their exclusive Boutique Lifestyle Collection.
Named after the prestigious neighborhood nestled against the hills of South Palm Springs, The Mesa blends Spanish Revival architecture with modern design elements, creating a captivating ambiance that truly qualifies as a “destination of imagination.” With its striking street presence, flowing neutral tones, rich textures, and highly functional layout, this home is a perfect balance of beauty and practicality for modern family living.
A key focus of The Mesa was biophilic design, an architectural approach that fosters a deeper connection between building occupants, nature, and wellbeing.
Several aspects of the home fully embrace biophilic elements:
- Ample natural lighting and ventilation, including skylights above showers and living spaces
- Seamless connection between indoor greenery and the surrounding landscape
- A range of shapes and forms found with repeated curves and arches
- Natural veins in stone benchtops
- Rawness in timber flooring, feature ceilings and cabinetry
- Subtle reflections from LED strip lighting
- Natural stone used both indoors and outdoors, showcasing its unique characteristics.
The upper-level living space is designed to engage and enrich our sensory experience. It provides a tranquil environment for reflection and stillness, offering the opportunity to relax while enjoying soothing music from the built-in speakers. Whether watching the sunset or the city lights, this space fosters a deep sense of calm and connection.
Collaboration Highlight: Maree O’Shea & Robyn Kirk’s Unique Design Vision
The standout aspect of The Mesa was the collaboration between Maree O’Shea, Creative Director of O’Shea & Sons Builders, and Robyn Kirk, a local Brisbane artist, interior stylist, and former gallery director. Maree and Robyn first connected through the Interior Design Association, where both held committee positions for several years.
Maree shares, “It was such a fun and enjoyable experience visiting Robyn’s studio and working through the pieces to select artwork that not only exemplified the space but also connected potential buyers to the biophilic design elements reflecting nature and wellbeing.” With decades of experience in curating private, public, and commercial spaces, Robyn’s work was a perfect fit for The Mesa.
Robyn adds, “When we think about it, we create our homes as an environment of beauty and order”. Her art captures a sense of magic within the realm of contentment—unpredictable and lacking control. The pieces aim to reflect emotion through dancing themes, vibrant colors, and the harmony of music.
Let’s explore some of those pieces:
- Dancing Key (galley)
- Dancing my Tune (media room)
- The Cuckoo Sings (master suite)
- Dancing Water (living)
- Raindrop Meld (bedroom)
- Rainbow Hues (powder)
- Heaven in Tulips (upper level living)
