Reduce your footprint by composting

One of the easiest ways to reduce the carbon footprint of your household is by composting. The Can-O-Worms from Tumbleweed is a user-friendly worm farm that makes recycling kitchen waste easy. It employs composting worms to eat up to half of their weight in organic household waste per day, rewarding gardeners with rich fertiliser. Made from 100-per-cent recycled plastic, it features two large-capacity collector trays, a ventilated collector tray and a fly-proof lid.

The family heirlooms

Most passionate gardeners have a jar of special seeds somewhere in the back of the shed or in the garden bed that has an interesting story behind it. The Diggers Club has hundreds. Founded in 1978, The Diggers Club has been inspiring passionate gardeners to create beautiful and productive gardens for decades and has grown into Australia’s largest and most respected gardening club. They have been trialing and saving heirloom seeds and sharing them with Diggers members for decades, and they plan to keep passing them down through the generations. In 2011, the Blazey family gifted the Diggers Club business and historic gardens to the Diggers Garden and Environment Trust — a non-profit trust committed to preserving Australia’s heritage of heirloom seeds, plants and gardens. That means when you join the Diggers Club, you’re also joining a seed-saving and preservation movement to ensure our gardening inheritance long into the future. For more information and details on the many events Diggers will be running in 2018 to celebrate their 40th year, or for locations of their public gardens and nurseries at Heronswood, St Erth, Adelaide and Cloudhill.

Reducing our footprint

As a sustainable organic farm, Organigrow is passionate about embracing renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprint. To reduce grid electricity usage, we recently added a large-capacity battery to our 15kW solar system to store and distribute power to run the farm’s packing sheds, cool rooms, feed lines and water pumps from the sun. We’re proud to say we’re now 95 per cent powered directly by renewable energy as well as exporting a significant amount to the grid. Also, the farm is no longer impacted by blackouts, so the hens always have an abundance of fresh water available and we have optimal efficiency for egg packing, storage and other electrical functions performed at the farm. A mobile app shows us how much power we are generating and storing as well as how much we put back into the grid. We expect the investment to pay for itself within two-and-a-half years, hence reducing costs, meaning we can pass these savings on to you, the consumer, when you purchase our high-quality organic eggs. We are proud of this renewable energy project and are exploring other renewable energy opportunities for the farm. We hope that other organic egg farms will follow our lead to reduce their carbon footprint.

Fleming’s Easy Care apples — great for organic gardens

Easy Care Crimson Crisp™ (PBR) and Easy Care Pixie Crunch™ (PBR) are two varieties of tasty apples that are highly pest-resistant as they’re bred specifically for resistance to apple scab, making them low maintenance and just right for home gardeners. The Easy Care range shows resistance to fire blight and, according to world-renowned horticulturist, Dr. Jules Janick, their flavour is top-notch. He is particularly fond of the juicy flesh of Pixie Crunch™. The smaller-sized fruit is delightful and is suitable for lunch boxes and a good variety for U-pick operations. Crimson Crisp™ is a creamy white-fleshed, red-skinned apple while Pixie Crunch™ is a bright-red-skinned apple with firm white flesh that is crisp to the crunch. Easy Care apples grow to approximately 4m × 4m and pollinate each other perfectly, as well as Jonathan, Granny Smith and many of the Ballerina® Columnar apple varieties.

The toothbrush that gives back

Introducing a new Aussie family business called Brush for Change, the eco-friendly toothbrush that gives back. When we say “gives back” we mean that when you purchase an eco-friendly bamboo four-pack of toothbrushes, the company GIVES BACK. That is, we donate $2 to an environmental cause AND two eco-friendly bamboo toothbrushes to underprivileged people. With Australia’s population rapidly approaching the 25 million mark, the impact of plastic toothbrushes on our environment is enormous — about 100 MILLION each and every year — and we want to change that! So we thought, what if we could provide people with an affordable alternative? Then we thought, what if we could also pay it forward? Hence the birth of Brush for Change. Get yours now for just $19.95 + $2 p&h for a pack of four.

For richer, better compost

Do you want to make richer and better compost, break down coarse leaf litter or dethatch your lawn? Earthlife has an exciting new product called Break Down, which utilises advanced enzyme technologies to accelerate the breakdown of organic material. Break Down will improve the decomposition of compost materials, giving you rich, friable humus and making available more of the valuable nutrients plants naturally require. It can be safely sprayed over lawns and turf to break down the thatch left behind after mowing, which means better water penetration, improved nutrient availability and — best of all — making it harder for weed seeds to sprout. Break Down is perfectly safe to use around living plants as it only targets organic residue. It is non-toxic to animals and humans and is even safe for septic systems.

The leading edge

When you first think of stunning outdoor areas, an assortment of plants and pavers may come to mind; garden edging is rarely at the top of the list. You’ll be surprised to know just how much clean borders and raised garden beds can set your landscape apart from the average. FormBoss™ Metal Garden Edging has been supplying designers, landscapers and weekend DIYers all over Australia for almost 10 years now. What sets FormBoss™ apart is the fact that you can produce straight lines, curves and garden beds on site with unprecedented ease and with little to no experience. Having the rolled top lip makes the edging completely safe as well as allowing you to connect easily. Anchoring the edging into the ground will completely conceal all fixings. Eight heights are available ranging from 75mm to 580mm in both ZAM and Corten steel.
