Designtank is a Brisbane-based boutique interior design studio led by Estelle Cameron.
Their approach balances traditional, timeless design with modern flair, transforming homes ranging from traditional Queenslanders to contemporary apartments. The studio was tasked with re-imagining the interiors of Bardon House, a classic Queenslander located in the inner west of Brisbane. The homeowners had lived in the house for a long time and intended to call it home for many more years.
The first stage in 2018 saw changes to the kitchen and living areas, and Designtank was overjoyed to be asked back for stage two. In this second stage, Estelle and her team oversaw the interior design, layout planning, and finishes selections to transform the primary ensuite into a contemporary luxury retreat for everyday use.
A bold, smoky dark blue defines two large vanities—a request of the owners so they could each have their own. They feature handcrafted pottery basins and plenty of storage. Both vanities are anchored by ceiling-hung mirrors framed in custom made steel frames to ensure the windows didn’t restrict the design yet could still allow light and airflow into the room. Estelle says, “Finding solutions to layout issues is a challenge I gladly accept. Small spaces have big possibilities when looked at from a different perspective.”
In an innovative design move, the flat ceiling was altered during construction to follow the lines of the roof—pitching the ceiling to add more height and volume. The additional wall height and raked ceiling was clad in VJ sheet and painted providing a neat continuity of materials with the rest of the house.
To infuse personality into the space, playful patterned floor tiles are matched to the grout colour on the wall tiles that surround the room. The light-filled bathroom is completed with a spacious shower with storage niche. Estelle and her team are proud to have exceeded their clients’ expectations in creating this thoughtfully considered ensuite oasis.
