A unique and contemporary design was the brief for this transformation.

The original structure comprised an out-of-date design which lacked the creative traits to truly maximise its stunning Sydney Harbour surrounds and required a fresh, modern approach.

Construction of the project presented many complex challenges for builder Alexander Illes. “The house retained half of the original fabric of the building, which required us to change the layout and details while structurally holding up the building to accommodate these alterations,” says Alexander. While the team got to work on the home’s new look, they were also strategically supporting three levels while doing so.

The new design, which was created in close consultation with the owner, leaves the home with a new modernity and flair. The fresh interior revitalises its framework and enhances the synergy between levels. It has been transformed into the perfect living station for the owners and now features four bedrooms, all with large bathrooms, plus three additional communal bathrooms throughout the three levels.

The overly generous master bedroom oozes style and sophistication, with a stunning walk-in wardrobe and a wet area that’s worked around a large Calacutta marble feature wall. Other luxury additions peppered throughout the home include a large office, steam room, gym, home theatre, lift, four-car garage and indoor pool.

Picture-perfect harbour views are captured through frameless glass bi-fold doors in the living and dining areas on the top level. These mesmerising views draw you out to a large entertaining deck as well as aid the seamless flow between the living zones and indoor kitchen hub. An amazing Calcutta marble slab with changing coloured lights is again a stand-out feature wall in the dining room.

The kitchen space is a cook’s dream. It has been custom designed with a chef’s pantry to accommodate an avid cook. It boasts a modern vibrancy that’s complemented by dramatic metallic graphite and silver hues. These are set against white tones and beautiful benchtops made of granite from Brazil. Large floor-to-ceiling glass walls expand the room and brighten the space with natural light.

Italian porcelain tiles complete the flooring, while neutral tones are used on the walls as a foundation for the owner to apply a spectacular décor. The finish also allows natural light to bounce off the interior for a fresh and luminous feel. Large aluminium-framed windows are set across all levels to increase this ambience, while a skylight at the highest level of the home allows light to beam down and filter into the body of the dwelling. Extravagant crystal chandeliers punctuate each storey, adding a touch of sparkle.

On the lower level, the lavish indoor pool is lined with bi-fold doors which highlight the feeling of swimming amid the natural surroundings — perfect for use in all seasons. Natural light again bursts through to complement the dreamy outdoor scenery. Rich, turquoise glass tiles dominate the custom-designed steam room as well and flow from the bottom of the pool to a feature wall, where the inclusion of an understated yet sophisticated fountain infuses luxury.

The quality of workmanship and finishes was a main concern for the owners, as they had personally selected the materials to be used throughout the home, including hand-picking the marble slabs from overseas. However, with Alexander Illes’ experienced tradesmen and minute attention to detail, the owners are delighted with the finished product.

A truly magnificent residence now stands with an aesthetically enhanced design that has a seamless flow. To create a sumptuous space while working around structurally supported levels is a true testament to the impressive design and skill brought to this project by the builder.
