This Modern Kitchen has an Effortless Indoor-Outdoor Connection

This contemporary, minimalistic home in Sydney’s inner west, characterised by clean white walls and concrete finishes throughout, required a kitchen of equal modernity, but one that would introduce some welcome warmth and texture.

ThinkDzine Interiors, under the guiding hand of director Dean Welsh, was called on to design, supply and install the kitchen, ensuring a seamless fit with both the interior and exterior spaces of the architect-designed abode.

“The brief was to create a kitchen that worked with the aesthetics of the home, was a bit funky and fun, and employed natural materials in a well-considered way,” explains Dean. “Functionality was just as important as the client loves to cook and a must-have was a casual seating area that, when the large sliding doors open up, feels naturally connected to the deck and outdoor entertaining area.

“Because the home heavily features the use of concrete floors and ceilings along with white walls and finishes, we decided to use dark-coloured striped timber veneer for the kitchen cabinets and table top to soften and enrich the space,” he continues. “We chose Cesar Elle cabinetry with a 45-degree finger-pull detail and Oak Termocotto wood veneer which is FSC-certified and has a vegetable oil finish.”

This was teamed with doors and random pocket-style open storage shelves finished in white water-based acrylic paint and benchtops of stainless steel and Caesarstone. To provide task and ambient illumination, LED lights were installed.

Designed for a young family that loves to entertain, maintaining an effortless indoor-outdoor flow was essential, as was positioning the cooking and eating zones so they felt linked to the alfresco entertaining area.

“In short, our goal was to create a kitchen that was in keeping with the style of the home, offered optimum functionality, featured the seamless integration of cabinetry and gave the family the flexibility to entertain in small or large groups,” says Dean. “I think we have succeeded on all counts.”
