Let There Be Light

The many benefits of having a home filled with natural light has been promoted for many years by architects and lifestyle commentators alike, as it increases the feeling of space in your home and it’s also linked to positive wellbeing.

We chatted with NSW leading home builder, McDonald Jones and their professional team of interior designers to find out how they achieve that beautiful architectural flow and feel in their award-winning homes.

Here we shine the light on their top tips to let the light in:

Raked ceilings

Raking ceilings are a wonderful and stylish way to create a contemporary home that feels light and bright. Primarily used with more modern facades with an architectural feel, the heightened ceilings undoubtedly make a room and home feel bigger.

Larger or architectural windows normally go with raked ceilings, which allow for additional airflow and natural light that will be loved.

We have a number of Display Homes with raked ceiling display homes, including the Havana at HomeWorld Marsden Park .

Louvres

Louvres provide all the benefits of cross-ventilation and airflow to elevate a home, but they also look stylish, as highlighted in the McDonald Jones Lakeside design on display at Watagan Park, in Lake Macquarie. Louvres allow for controlled natural airflow and light throughout living spaces, bedrooms and bathrooms whilst still offering privacy with a range of glazing options available.

Skylights

Skylights bring natural light into areas such as kitchens, hallways and bathrooms, which has the bonus effect of preventing the build-up of mould as some open for additional ventilation.

We adore the McDonald Jones Havana Display Homes at HomeWorld Marsden Park & Forster Grange for their completely different styling and use of raked ceiling with skylights.

Stacker Doors

McDonald Jones home designs are loved for the architectural connection throughout the home and seamless transition from indoors to outdoors connecting to your natural environment.

A wonderful way to increase the natural light in your home is to install large bi-folding or stacker doors which are a stylish choice to transform an entire wall of your home into glass for breathtaking views and to create an easy flow, perfect for entertaining.

We invite you to explore the Santa Monica 15 at Wongawilli and the new San Marino Manor at Forster Grange to experience the beautiful effect stacker doors have on a home design.

Light & Airy Colour Palette

Select lighter colours for your walls to add spaciousness throughout all rooms of your home, no matter what the size and window design.

Whites, like Big White and Illusive White from the Taubman’s range, make a space feel brighter as they reflect the natural light, rather than absorbing it.

Another interior design trick is to choose a paint with a satin finish to reflect more light, and to paint the ceiling a couple of shades lighter than the walls to create the illusion of more height and space.

Explore the McDonald Jones compact two-storey Saxonvale at HomeWorld Box Hill, the Tulloch at HomeWorld Marsden Park and the NOW Series Valiente on display at Wongawilli to experience three uniquely different styled homes across a light palette.
