Jason Grant is an iconic interior designer, author and creator of the visual treat of a blog, Mr Jason Grant. His restrained and elegant designs are sophisticated templates for modern living, swooned over by elite design magazines. A devotee to the Australian lifestyle and lover of all things chic, Jason centres on relaxed, casual designs with a distinctly coastal flavour.
With 10 years’ experience under his belt, Grant’s work has appeared in many Australian and international magazines, including our very own Grand Designs. Grant himself is similar to the homes he designs — cheerful, relaxed and delightfully down-to-earth. A unique design aesthetic reflecting his signature flair set Grant on the path to design success. “My individual interior style is relaxed, fresh and accessible,” he explains. “I like to mix high and low, old and new to create happy homes. I think my style is all about feeling good.”
Grant lives in Bondi and his lifestyle is quintessentially Australian, using a ‘less is more’ approach when it comes to styling his fabulously furnished home. “Lately it’s become more about editing,” says Grant. “My home is relaxed and not over-styled; I really like my home to be lived in and not too precious.”
His personal style reflects his love of interiors – classic and eclectic – and disregards anything that is cookie-cutter. “I love using pops of colour mixed with natural materials like timber in my spaces,” says Grant. “I recently launched an encaustic tile collection with Di Lorenzo tiles so I cannot wait to use these in a project.”
To those who are feeling overwhelmed by the process of redecorating, renovating or designing a new home from scratch, Grant offers s simple tip: “Art works and plants are two simple ways of adding life to a space. I’m a big fan of indoor greenery, plants or flowers and I also love to display graphic, colourful artworks or photography in my spaces.”
With two books under his belt – A Place Called Home and a follow-up, Holiday at Home/Away at Home — Grant is a force to be reckoned with. His third book, Modern Retro Home, is due for release in September. “It’s been a little while coming but I’m super-excited to share this one,” he says.
So what key piece of advice would Grant give to amateur designers today? “Dream big, work hard and always smile.” Amen to that.
