Spacious and modern

A contemporary design with warm, subdued colours gives this kitchen a sophisticated style

This kitchen was designed to suit the modern lifestyle of the client who owned a high-end shoe store in South Yarra, so it had to be modern, not too clinical and include a little colour. And, of course, it had to be stylish. With these specific requests and the especially large area to work with, Urban Kitchens designer Con Moshopoulos let his imagination run wild.

The focus of the design was on warmth, with the owner choosing a range of browns and being very creative with the colours and benchtops he selected. Con took his lead and ran with it, designing a layout that not only utilised the spacious floor plan, but accommodated the modern needs of a businessman.

Albedor vinyl-wrap products were selected for the kitchen with Bitter Black making a striking statement for the overhead cupboards above the cooktop and panels in the island bench. Its dark, dramatic qualities are offset by the light-coloured Royal Oyster Gloss on the other cupboards, creating an impressive contrast. Three modern pendant lights hang from the ceiling over the island bench, lighting up the workspace, while sleek stainless-steel appliances and glass splashbacks enhance the kitchen’s contemporary appeal. Concurrent with his other choices, the client selected CaesarStone Free Spirit for the island bench which, according to Con, “was very out there in colour”, while the rest of the kitchen’s benchtops in the neutral-toned CaesarStone Nougat. Continuing with the eye-catching effect, the contract of the two coloured benchtops worked perfectly with the rest of the kitchen, along with the use of handle-free extrusions and symmetrical drawers. That was one thing this kitchen had in abundance: drawers. In fact, it featured an entire wall with so many drawers that Con made sure to highlight this in the overall design with accessibility and storage being the key to a great kitchen. With ample room to move between cupboards and benches, and a stylish, contemporary look with a warm feel, this kitchen allows the owner to make a statement in the most modern and sophisticated way.
